I know that ConocoPhillips merged and have been trying to slowly kill marketig for the '76'brand, but what happened to it's oils? From what I remember their Super Synthetics were breakthrough in terms of new age technology, as well as dino oils. I think they were the first to introduce titanium in Heavy Duty Diesel oils for locomotives, cranes, fleet trucks etc. Can you still buy Union 76 oils & lubes? If not, are their formulas being used in either the Conoco, Phillips, or Kendall brands that anyone knows of?

just curious, as I was born and still live less than 4 miles from Rt.66 and miss the ole Orange ball!

Well...Union Oil Company of California changed its name to Unocal in 1983, then Unocal sold its retail business to Tosco in 1997 (and I don't know if Tosco or someone else was blending 76 brand lubes then), and in 2005 Unocal sold out to then-ChevronTexaco. ConocoPhillips acquired some assets from Tosco including the 76 brand.

There are lots of industrial users of 76 industrial lubes as well as lots of 76 retail automotive lubes in certain markets. As best I can make out from the data sheets, 76, Kendall, Conoco, and Phillips lubes seem to be identical (and very good).

In 2002, Phillips Petroleum Company, 76 Lubricants’ parent company, merged with Conoco Inc. to become ConocoPhillips Company, the fourth largest U.S. lubricants supplier. ConocoPhillips will continue to meet customers’ product, service and value expectations through teamwork and cooperation. In addition, product lines will constantly be improved and developed to help address the needs of the expanding industry.

I think the Kendall would be easier to find than the 76 brand and it is the same stuff. Go to the web sites for Kendall or 76 Lubricants and look for a where to buy/dealer locator and check your state.

In Ontario, at least, ALL you can find is Kendall oils. Even then, they aren't that common...only one distributor (Stinson & Sons), and even they aren't that big of a company. They also don't sell their synthetic ols at the retail level, you have to buy them by the case....

The Joe's chain in the Pacific Northwest carries it (the synth blend/Kendall clone); until recently, it was their loss-leader at $.99/qt. Alas, the decline of CSK & Joe's rebate deals means no more stash building for me.

There is an independent oil change shop in my hood that uses 76 oils. I assume he either carries or can order the synthetic 76 oils.

I bought a case of 76 Super Synthetic 5W-40 for my mothers VW. It was a 502 spec oil. I called up my local 76 distributor. They didn't stock it, but they ordered it for me. When I went to pick it up. I was amazed that they had a warehouse full of 76 products. It looked like they had every kind of fluid for the trucking industry. I didn't know 76 was that big in industrial fluids.
