What are some good, but inexpensive gear lubes for the rear end of my 1979 2wd Dodge pickup? One that climbs like Schaffers, or a Synthetic like Redline or Royal Purple? I'm frugal and want the most bang for my buck.THANKS!!

Dino would work but I would go with a syn like Amsoil or Red Line. I just ordered some Amsoil. I have used Red Line, Royal Purple and Amsoil. I went back to Amsoil. It is relatively inexpensive...about $6.50 per quart. You can change it every 100,000 miles or so depending on how you use / drive the vehicle. I think that the Amsoil is worth the small cost difference.

oops.......I should have typed the correct cost of the Amsoil Severe Gear. It is $8.80 a quart not the $6.50 I erroneously typed. It is still cheap and good.....two things that don't always go together.

Yeah Amsoil is good and I try to get it when I can but it's hard to find in my area. I have tried Valvoline Dura Guard or whatever it's called. It's a dino/syn blend which I really don't care much about. But it stopped wear in my front axle.

I had Wally-World Supertech 85w-140 in my front Dana 30 axle with a Lock-Right locker. That oil is the worst I have ever seen. It foamed considerably and produced small hard to see metal filings.

I ran the Valvoline stuff after a good cleaning and after draining saw neither any foaming or metal filings anymore. I refilled again and am running that since it is only $5 something and readily availible by me.

I like Royal Purple Max gear but's $10-11 a qrt. Amsoil is of course good esp. if it's $8.80 a qrt. as posted above. Schaeffers is excellent but the cost is unknown to me anymore. Pick one of the 3 with the best price.

Royal Purple all the way. Use the weight that is called for if available. That would probably be 80W-90. RP, and most synthetic mfg's, don't have 80W-90 in qt bottles( a couple do but not many )however these days. If you need 80W-90 for your truck use RP 75W-90. Will work just fine.

I just bought 5 qts to swap my NBS 07 Silverado over and paid $8.75 p/qt.
