NAPA and Advance Auto stock the Mann filters, but NAPA is cheaper. A 10 pack of the Mann W917 filters cost $49.99 free shipping at FCP Euro.

Only if they have the same exact media. Otherwise you can't draw that conclusion. Pure speculation.

Exactly. If Fram specs that filter for that car, and the bypass is set to 12 psi then there shouldn't be anything to worry about.

Agreed.

Plus don't get too hung up on bypass valve pressure. Its rarely utilized and only there to maintain oil flow in any condition. It will open at cold-start only and really only open for a couple/few seconds. And if you lose a bearing, rod, etc and you pack the media full of shrapnel, the bypass valve will prob come in handy...albeit after your engine is trashed. Most of the valves are in the 8-20psi range. As long as the filter doesn't implode, rest assured your engine is getting oil whether its through the media or bypass valve. And the filters without valves are usually only used on engines which have their own built-in bypass valve (not as many of those around it seems).

The bypass valve rating 12 vs 19 is prob even dumber than we think, and its simply one of the standard valves the filter-makers' use. Not like they carry a special spring for every application/model. Its a commodity, less part numbers to manage, cheaper, etc.

Most of the European-built Mann filters I've seen are waaaaaaaaay over-built. And they're too pricey. Plus a lot of the Mann stuff here in the US/Can nowadays is actually made in a US or Chinese Purolator plant now (same company!) with not-the-same-Euro-quality as the Euro-built Mann stuff.

Good news: it's easy to spot the difference.

Mann part numbers starting with M (ML oil filters, MA air filters, MC cabin filters, MF fuel filters, etc) are reboxed Purolators.

Mann part numbers starting with W (spin-on oil filters), HU (cartridge oil filters), C (air filters), or CU (no-charcoal cabin filters), CUK (charcoal cabin filters), or FP (bioshield cabin filters) are real European Mann.

In fact, sometimes both types will be available for the same car/engine. For example, the 2.2L Ecotec, both types are available: the ML1015 (a reboxed L15436) and the HU 6007x (a real Mann that is made in Spain).

The OP's W917 is made in Germany

I just picked up another W917 made in Germany, and I agree it is built very good. Never weighed one yet, so I put it on my postal scales, and it weighed in at 15.3 ounces. Getting close to a pound! Next time I am going to buy the 10 pack at FCP Euro for $49.99 shipped.

My Volvo 240 DL is at 350,000 now, and just barely takes a sip of oil between oil changes. Pennzoil 10w-30 and Mann/Volvo filters is what I use, so that's why I am partial to the Mann filters.

Mann lists some filters crosses on their box. Fiaam FT 4828, Fram PH-7328, Hengst H 10 W 06, Mahle OC 204, and Tecnocar R 18.

The W917 is an excellent filter. I recently cut one open and there are a lot of pleats in there.

Mahle OC204

This....

But I'd lean toward the European built Mann/Mahle options.

If all cars were built like volvo's i would be out of business their engines are usually bullet proof as long as you change your timing belt because if that breaks its over.

im pretty sure mann merged with purolator and the purolaters started tearing around the time mann took over unless im wrong... If i am correct i would not even think of telling someone to use them especially someone in automotive school that heard all about the tearing purolators. I would be doomed lol !!

You're only partially correct. Although Mann owns Purolator, the tear scare for Mann only applies to non-European applications.

The European Mann filters are sold in the US for European cars that came with them. Part numbers will start with W (for a spin-ob) or HU (for a cartridge).

The reboxed Purolator part numbers start with ML.
