Well, I'm at Jiffy Lube today, in Salem, Massachusetts (they screwed up my air pressure on my tires last week when I took it to them to dump the factory fill with MY filter, I made em fix it).
Lo and behold, three Massachusettts State Police cars were in there getting the oil changed, Crown Vics all, 2 2003s, and a 2004, all over 100,000 and one of the 2003s had 188,000. They were pretty candid about them, and they're running 5W20 in them, with (GASP!) Jiffy Lube white filter cans.. The trooper that was chatty said none of them had new engines, these guys were apparently from the same barracks. When they were gone, the mechanic doing my tires (with MY gauge, 42F/40R), confirmed 5W20 in all three with Jiffy Lube filters all.
I'd say the police packages put in these unmarked Crown Vics PROBABLY have hit redline a TIME OR TWO in their long days of service on the Massachusetts Turnpike, I-95, and I-93 north on up to Vermont. And somehow, they held together against all odds with 5W20 Bulk Jiffy Lube oil and Jiffy Lube filters.
Would the Police Packages be a better, stronger build that in the Mustang in question? These engines looked bigger to me in the engine compartment than the 4.6 L that's usual in a stocker Crown Vic by the way, but they had no identifying stickers or labels on them. In any case, bulk 5W20 with Jiffy Lube filters in cars that undoubtedly see severe service every single day. Oh, they bring the cars in every 5,000 miles, so said my chatty Bear-hat wearing trooper. He said he does 5 grand every month and a week, and he takes his car home with him.
Again, all this in big hot V-8s with 5W20, and Jiffy Lube (Fram?) filters. Kinda blows away my former 20W50 old-guy concerns and assumptions that gave me the willies this morning when I put 5W20 Motorcraft with a Hyundai OEM filter into my dinky little new 1.6 DOHC Accent GT this morning.
I have achieved automotive nirvana in Gloucester, Massachusetts today. I am comfy now with the idea of 5W20 SM dino. Anyone care for a lobster to celebrate?
