Maybe you should start a separate thread for that Goldenrod. There is some disagreement to this. Best way I can answer it is get a set of gauges and hook them up to a motor designed for 5w20 and measure the pressure after the oil pump. Use different weight oil, take the car for a drive and observe oil pressure over the driving cycle.quote:

Yes. The volume pumped is inversely related to the viscosity. Same thing for the flow through the bearings. The rise in temperature of the oil in the bearing is directly related to the viscosity.quote:

High viscosity? BMW's specified oil in the US has been their LongLife 5w30 for years (which is nothing more than relabeled Castrol Softec TXT 5w30).quote:

Yes, they have to demonstrate a certain percentage better fuel efficiency than a 5w30 3.0 HTHS standard oil. HTHS and fuel efficiency correlate fairly well.quote:

Just speculation, of course, but perhaps the engineer was there precisely to help Ford make that case. They know that they have the burden of proof if the case goes to court, and they also know that they'll need an engineering expert to meet that burden. There won't be any engineers poking around when you've got a broken radio face plate, but an engine is, obviously, a rather expensive thing to replace.quote:

On the other hand, I would think the PCM memory may record the number of times the engine was taken past the redline, in which case driver fault would be easy to prove.
