ok, first I must say that in a previous thread I have already asked what oil filter would be good for my car but most of the answers were 'all of those choices are good' but I would like more specific answers so I am reposting will a list of about 4 filters. I have an '04 Civic with about 4500 miles on it now. I'm going to do 5k mile oci's to conform to Honda requirements and I'm going to use Mobil 1 0w-20. The filters I have in mind are: Purolator Pure One, Purolator Premium Plus, Napa Gold, Supertech, or the OEM Honda filter ( which could be manufactured by filtech or Fram depending on what Honda sends the dealers, i asked the people at hands-accessories about this) Please choose disregarding the price even though there aren't big differences between them and keep in mind what you would use if it were your car. Any input would be highly appreciated.

Well being that the car is new and you will be using M1, I say save the bucks and use the ST (or a cheap one from Autozone or advance)

I have used M1 filters for all my cars until I switched last year to Purolator's Pure One. Despite some of the comments about restricted flow, I have had no issues. I use M1 5w-30 in a 2001 Pathfinder and 2003 4-Runner. M1 10w-30 in 1996 Rav4. Oil and filter changes every 6 months with OCI mileage between 4,000 and 7,000 miles depending on the vehicle.

go to any online parts place and find a 'denso' brand filter for your application. The denso first time fit is an excellent filter that tends to be a bit larger than the honda/acura OE filters.

since you say it's a bit larger I assume it is not OEM sized which means it might not be intended for my car and I'm still under warranty so I would like to stick to a filter speced for my engine, thanks for your suggestion though, I would go with the Toyo Roki one for the S2000 but it's a little pricy to change it every 5k or 5 months.

asiancivicmaniac,

i have used 2 honda oem fram filters in my 04 dx.. no problems.

I have a 2004 Honda Civic VP and have Supertech and FRAM filters (both 7913?). at $2 and $3 respectively- can't beat the bang for the buck! Once the oem fill is due I will use Mobil One 0w20!!

I am running the supertech filters on a new 2004 vehicle and will run it as long as I can find them in this particular configuration (vertical install. So I am all for the most convenient of those choices. Not worth running around town for that special filter.

If you can't get the Filtech OEM, may as well use the ST. I haven't seena comparision of the AZ or AA cut open compared to ST. Neither is available in the ST 3950 I use or many other numbers.

Doesn't Honda spec a much longer OCI

If this is their severe duty OCI ..then why such an expensive oil? You don't have extreme climate issues ..at least from a start up stand point.

But if you're dedicated to overkill (and most of us are) ..then I don't see the economical point to a cheap, albeit acceptable, filter. You might as well get the best you can find regardless of the cost. It will add little to the amount your spending on M1 as compared to MC 5w-20 @ $1.5x a quart.

Well this is my first car so I want to give it the best, I was thinking as long as you use a good quality filter then price shouldn't matter even if it is low priced it doesn't mean it is low quality, I just want to use Mobil 1 because once the warranty is over I want to do extended drains which is three years from now so why not run M1 from the start. Also I do a lot of city driving so I assume that putting in a higher quality oil(M1) will reduce wear and synthetics run cleaner (don't they?).

Over that short duration ..I dunno

Synths really shine under longer duration or more severe conditions. I don't think that you have either ..but ..let's see what others think.

Baldwin or Hastings family make a high quality filter worth considering,,, the super tech is also good,,pure one is a also choice stuff...BL

I think 5k mile OCI's are achievable with the quality Dino. The extra money would be better spent on LC and FP, gas money. For 5kmi OCI's that engine won't see the difference. But it's the owners choice.

I looked up the maintenance log in the manual and it says for severe conditions change the oil every 5,000 miles and the filter every 10,000. Would it be a better idea if I used a M1 filter and run it for 10k and change the oil every 5k or just get a cheaper filter and change it simultaneously?

Buy a Purolator and donate the extra money you save over inferior Fram products to the board.

Right now, I'd recommend using the Mobil-1 filter. Last week, I did my first UOA with particle counts. As you can see from the data, the combination of GC and the M1 filter resulted in oil that is clean even by hydraulic system standards (more demanding than motor oil). Unfortunately, I none of my other UOAs have the optional particle counts, and I have not seen other PC-UOAs against which to compare, but for now, I have seen objective lab evidence showing what a great job the M1 does. I encourage others to order the optional particle counts on their UOAs so we start to see clearly which filters really do the best job. I plan to run a K&N for the next UOA, to get a comparison going. At this point (while waiting for more data), I've decided that the M1 is clearly worth the price, although if someone gets similar particle count results on a cheaper filter, I'll re-evaluate.
