I think I remember that photograph (I am an old guy). I think he did successfully stop the movement of the tanks because they did not want to run over him and have that broadcast all over the world. Somebody somewhere has to stand up. If nobody stands up and we all give in that is the end of freedom.

Oh, I will continue to use my computer. But I will store my data locally on optical discs and external hard drives. And actually I don't make too many telephone calls and I don't own a cellphone. I have a fairly low profile. And people in general will soon get tired of all of this control and intrusion in their lives and there will be changes.
There was a fundamental miscalculation made by the people who would enslave us. People who have been free for a long time do not easily bend to tyranny. In other countries, where people have always been slaves, one brutal regime can replace another.
Now a lot of people in the USA are robotic and have been programmed, but there are still a lot of people who can think on their own. I am actually one of the most optimistic guys around.

The likely scenario for the first tank's driver is disciplinary action too (for not crushing a "rebel"). I heard in an interview of one of the former soldier participate in the crackdown, that he felt guilty and refuse to accept a medal / bonus for the action and was thrown into a military jail for a few years until he was dishonorably discharged (no retirement benefits).

The U.S. Government is afraid of what the public will eventually find out - and that being the World Trade Center towers were not brought down by airplanes, but by a series of controlled demolition explosions. Those buildings were so tough and so strong, that a Boeing 767 going through one of them is like a pencil going through a window screen. You may now have a hole in your window screen, but that is only minor damage to its overall structural integrity. When the U.S. citizens finally realize what happened on that day, all this surveillance will make sense.
Let us put this to rest right now. I personally saw, on TV, the second airliner fly into the World Trade Center tower. And hundreds or maybe even thousands of people saw those airliners fly into the World Trade Center.
You are right about one thing-there was a lot of damage but those towers may have stayed standing except for one thing-the material protecting the steel from fire and heat was blown off. The steel beams were exposed to fire at somewhere above 1000 degrees.
Now, I worked in a steel fabrication facility. Steel does not melt until about 3000 degrees. But the steel did weaken exposed to the flames from the jet fuel and other stuff that caught on fire. When the steel weakened it could no longer support the weight of all of that concrete and steel. Terrorists are responsible for the destruction of the World Trade Center.

Jetliners flew into the WTC towers but that's not what brought the buildings down. There's
