What does Jailbroken/Unlocked mean?

So, any way the Samsung Galaxy S3 would be INcompatible with certain carriers?

I also thought GSM vs CDMA mattered?

Verizon is CDMA everyone else is GSM. Unless its a global phone, its normally one or the other.

Thought Sprint was CDMA too?

This phone was sourced from Sprint

Unlocked means the phone has no carrier restriction the term unlocked really only applies to gsm carriers. Cdma is a bit different. And yes sprint is cdma as well. Some phone's like a Samsung Galaxy Note 2 on at&t support t-mobile's aws 3g band but require a baseband flash from a t-mobile version to properly get 3g on t-mobile. Even though unlocking phones doesn't really apply to cdma phones used on a cdma network some newer 4g lte phones on say sprint or verizon do have gsm/umts bands for international roaming and lte bands that can be locked to that particular network they can be unlocked and used on any gsm network (in theory). Good luck getting that to happen cdma carriers really lock their phones down. The iphone 5 is only phone I know of that can be taken from a cdma carrier and used on a gsm carrier with no unlocking required. Jailbreaking info can be found here

To make this even more fun, Samsung is now locking phones to a region.

Samsung region locking phones

This is absolutely baffling considering how hard they are marketing phones to the business sector. Business people travel.

Samsung has increasingly done things to make life more difficult for the user while boosting their marketing. Increasingly, it's more about gimmick than substance. My Galaxy Nexus is likely the last Samsung phone I will own.

I am exploring ways to maybe get my Sprint Samsung S3 to work on AT&T or T-Mobile? Can that happen? Or, anything GSM??....

That, or I'll just go to Sprint and get on a contract for their upgrade program. Not sure yet.

I thought sprint wasnt GSM??? Need a pricey smartphone like you need to be breathing CO on your commute. Come on. Important stuff, not toys that suck your money dry and keep you from being able to fix your cars.

No, Sprint is CDMA. You should be able to get it over to Cricket though.

According to Verizon, their 4GLTE Android phones are already unlocked. However, it may only be capable of voice when another carrier's SIM card is used.

My Note 2 is stuck on VZW data, but I should be able to put a SIM from anywhere in the world and have it work for voice.

My old Incredible 2 on the other hand is fully unlocked by VZW and has been used for voice and data in the UK.
