Im not too too familiar with V-dubs, but my friend just got a 2013 VW Jetta. Are these good cars? They got the base 2.5 5 cylinder with the 6 speed auto.

Firends have a tdi wagon 2013 my and absolutely love it.

We have a rabbit with the 2.5 which has been great.

If the Jett's has cloth seats, be careful... The seats in our rabbit have been fine, but my brother's '11 golf, which is more similar to the 13, has had an issue with seat materials fraying.

Hopefully it has leatherette, which is awesome stuff.

My only complaint with our 2.5 is that the manual trans was set up for city driving, and needed different ratios or a 6th gear for highway. It would easily be a 33-35mpg car then, and it has great torque. I'd be afraid of the AT, but the sixth gear is probably a decent od,..

Actually the base model Jetta has the 2L 4 cylinder engine that is only a slightly modified version of the same unit that has been around for about 25 years now. LOL

That being said while slow it is darn near indestructible with the bare minimum of maintenance. If you get it with the manual transmission it is actually not too bad.

I don't give any weight to what a lot of the automotive press has said about the latest Jetta, it is a solid, well built, generally reliable, well designed vehicle for most folks. It is a bit spartan, in the manner that VWs USED to be, a good thing! This version returns more to its roots in many ways which is NOT bad at all.

It reminds me of the MKI Jetta, which was simple, durable, a little fun to drive, and affordable too.

The 2.5L 5 cyl motor is not the most economical engine, but it is durable, and very reliable, and has decent get up and go.
VW slush boxes have come a LOOOONG way, even since the mid 90s.
They too, (not including DSG) are trouble free with minimal maintenance.

Perhaps I'm misremembering, but isn't the wagon version based on the previous Jetta?

If I'm remembering correctly, the Jetta sedan and wagon don't share a chassis.

Yes, the wagon is based on the previous Jetta.

The 2011+ Jettas have been downgraded in some ways depending on the model.
The GLI in the only model that gets an independent rear suspension and it has a soft touch dash instead of hard plastic.
Every Jetta has a better looking interior than other cars for the same money to me.
I test drove a Jetta TDI and thought it was nice.

The sales-guy said the TDI's can do 5 MPG better than EPA on long highway drives due to the EPA 765 second test cycle that doesn't get the diesel engine warm enough to reach optimum fuel efficiency.

I really like the Jetta's leatherette seats. They feel good and will probably be like the old Mercedes leatherette seats that looked new at 25 years old.

I do like the VW Leatherette.

It feels better than real leather in a lot of cars. Reminds me of the MB-Tex leatherette in older Mercedes Benzes. (seats aren't boingy like an older MB though) Should wear as well too.

The only thing I really don't like is the 2.5 L5. And that's mainly because it's not really as good as the current crop of similar sized competitive 4 cylinders. I guess it's pretty well balanced considering it has an extra cylinder but it's really kinda' a blah engine.

The 2-point-Slow has an excuse at least. It's been powering Jettas since the MKIII. I think the 2-point-Slow and the Civic Hybrid/Insight are the last new 2 valve per cylinder 4 cylinders on sale in the US.
I like all of the 2.0s. Turbo, diesel, and even the above 2-point-Slow (just because it is odd and has been in production seemingly forever)

Sat in one (sedan) and test drove - cheapish interior, unrefined feel.
Previous generations were so much better feeling, material-wise and ride-wise. The current ones feel not up to par with the competition.

Only way to escape the cheap-ish stuff is getting the wagon, as already has been pointed out, it's based on previous generation.

Many accounts I've read indicate the 2.5 is a substandard engine compared to what's out there from other mfrs and other engine(s) VW has available.

I know several people with late model VW's. While they look like well designed cars and I'm sure they drive nice, as they aged and needed maintenance performed (alternator, water pump, wheel bearing, etc.), the parts costs were nothing short of astronomical compared to similar mainstream vehicles. Has that changed any?
