What do you call your aunt?

Ant or Awnt?

I have always said Ant. Two guys I know who grew up in South Dakota, both say Awnt.

I used to say "awnt" until I got laughed at by classmates in high school. I've been saying ant ever since. Peer pressure works!

Aunt (then first name). I cannot bring myself to call my Aunt, who is senior to me by 20 years (early 50's), by her first name.

When I ahm in NooWingland, I refir to my mothahs sistah as my ahnt. As ahntie Ann said, "A(u)nts are what show up uninvited at picnics.

Come to think about it, I don't think I have anyone left to call ahnt

Now here ..they're ants ..and they too show up at some picnics ..but they're usually invited.

I actually look to see if their names have hard or soft vowel sounds and apply the same to the "aunt" prefix. "Ant" Cynthia I spell out though everyone else calls her "Cindy", but I get that extra soft "a" in, it sounds good.

Mainiac's can often do a "r" thing instead of the "ah". While some Cap Cod type might say "sit yah ahss down heah" ..my (originally) Mainiac uncle kinda blends the "r" in there at times. "Sityerous down heah" Instead of lobs-tah ..it's almost lobs-tar Chow-dar instead of chow-dah

I grew up hearing that only "yankees" and "bourgeouis" people pronounced it "aunt", hence my family always saying "ant".

I think you want to know how people pronounce "ant." Obviously there are two basic pronunciation options, as is frequently the case especially with vowels. What's the dilemma?

There are so many titles for aunts in Chinese. My dad's sisters are called one title and my mother's sister is another title. My dad's brother's wife is another title. If my mom had any brothers still living and they had wives, then they would have a different title.

But in English I use a(u)nt, aunt, and auntie.

So in Chinese you differentiate between blood aunts, in-law aunts, maternal and paternal aunts? What about cousins? For example, 15th cousin, 5 times removed.
