What Constitutes a true BITOGer

If you’ve given unsolicited oil related advice to people who could not care less.

Someone who is neurotic, OCD, who overthinks the most basic thing, basing decisions off advertising and feelings, all in the face of overwhelming empirical evidence.......

I think it is a willingness to always be a learner. After all..... the likes of API continues to live strong and change things, and it seems the EPA will continue with its death grip on killing great oil. (I still wish I could buy green German Castrol.)

I joined back in 2008 and by 2015, I felt I had learned about all there was to learn about lubricants. After 2015, I would go months without logging on and reading. Prompting me to log on was usually a vehicle acquisition. And here I am again, after purchasing a new Wrangler.

But before even logging on, I thought I had my answer before I even asked a question. I was wrong.

I had no idea what MS-13340 was.... and I had to read and learn. I had no idea that we are now to SQ..... and I had to read and learn.

Sure, I have tried many dozens of oils the past 17 years and I have my informed opinions, but I learned some things this morning.

Great BITOG'ers are lifelong learners.

Guilty……..only it’s a 25 year old beater! And 90% of the parts are NLA!

I'll see your 25 year old beater and raise you by 6.
Additionally, it's a Panther, one of the official cars of BITOG.
Full disclosure, those awful aftermarket wheel covers were removed immediately and replaced with the correct OEM ones. A UOA sample was taken and the oil/filter changed.

Does this count? These were in the Promotions folder of my Gmail - I saw "Your faith can spark change" and immediately thought it was about a spark plug change interval, which would lead to an "anti-seize vs no anti-seize" debate. 😉

Bonus: A Rock Auto newsletter, and a solicitation for a Canadian Tire credit card.

There are a few people on this website that love to troll around looking for people to try to start an argument with just so they can instill as much doubt in their mind as possible by telling them that they're always wrong and nothing that they're doing is correct, etc.

They love their whataboutisms as well as saying things like "are you sure?" and "how do you really know?" They never actually provide any advice at all whatsoever but always act like they are smarter and know better than everyone else. My favorite thing they do is when they make contradictory statements and apparently in their mind it is not cognitive dissonance, it's just that you're not smart enough to understand the convoluted BS they're trying to sell you on.

I'm starting to think that they're just people that have too much time on their hands so they come to websites like this to entertain themselves by being as obnoxious as they can in bad faith towards people who are trying to engage in good faith.

I have come up with a list. Others can add as they see fit.

To be a true BITOGER you must have at least TWO of the following.

1) specific tool - oil filter cutter
2) specific tool - UOA sample pump
3) more than 10 cases of oil in stash (motor or gear oil)
4) more than 2 grease guns for Zerk fittings

Extra credit if your wife knows you bought either #1 or #2 OR if #3 is kept in your bedroom.
I have at least 50 Qts “0W20” of oil on hand several filter removal tools, 2 dozen + filters and crush washers. Oil extractor and filter cutter. Maybe not a senior official compared to some but have the ranks.

Do you have any facts to back this up?

My facts aren't good enough even if I provide exactly what you ask, somehow I need to do something completely different because you told me so but then when I do it precisely as you've asked I'm still in the wrong. Nope I need actually do what you originally told me to do better but I don't do it correctly because I'm not you and you and only you can do it right but you're not going to do it but instead demand that everyone else does it and when they do you'll be right there to tell them that they've done everything wrong because they're not you! 🤣

I agree. I joined this forum to try to help people with whatever I learned over my years of wrenching. I have no formal mechanical certificates, no engineering degrees, no metallurgy degrees, no nothing. But I do have experience in a wide variety of general vehicle diagnosis and repair. I'm not here to belittle anybody, or aggravate anybody. I had originally thought that what this forum was. The more I'm on it, I see how far down on the pecking order I am. Didn't realize it was so cliquish. You live and learn. That's life. I'll be posting less to stay out of the way. Just post for simple , small stuff.. It's sad. I really liked this forum. I was just trying to help others that I could help.

Seems much simpler if you'd just come do it for me. Then you only have yourself to blame (or question). I'll be here all day.

Hang in there Mr 50. Not all threads devolve into chaos. It's the squeaky threads that get the grease (and please don't go down the "what's the best grease for a squeaky thread" route).

There are a few "know it all" people, but that's life in general. If you know you are correct, stand your ground.

I would suggest maybe a different tone perhaps though. It's OK to challenge immutable facts, but you really can't expect people to just roll over and say "OK". IOW, bring some data.............which OK yes. That's the bugger isn't it...?
