Cust brought in 2002 f150 110k 5.4l had a service champ on it unknown oci. This is what came out the middle of the filter. Just by tapping it on the ground all that stuff came out.

Looks like somebody scraped some #4 char from an oak barrel and shoved them in the engine. Unfortunately I wouldn't bet on the other stuff tasting like bourbon.

That's pretty effin scary... glad it's not my engine!

My guess was they where a pain in the behind at the previous shop so they got something in there motor. But would something placed in the motor be inside the middle of the filter? Or would it be on the outside of the filter media under the bypass valve?

Did they remove a valve cover before and maybe use the blue form a gasket sealant on it? A stray gob of that stuff that ran through the engine a million times could turn into that and get caught in the filter. That one in your hand looks like a piece, not just bits. No? Because otherwise I am a loss.

I don't understand how it could get into the centertube of the filter? I would guess some type of tear or end cap separation. You would have to cut the filter open to see what is going on.

It does look like nylon or delrin.

Very strange that crud came out the center tube. Probably some of it has also went into the engine.

OP said, "No i cant cut the filter at work or take it home." Looks like we'll never know.

Also, just because the OP tapped out the pictured sample doesn't mean it came from the center tube necessarily.

The entire interior of the filter could be crumbled/torn/tattered and more of the same stuff could be hanging on to the ragged edges.

Is Service Champ a good name? I believe it's a bottom tier filter like a "Group 7". And, as the OP said, "Unknown OCI".
