People that think you need to spend $15 for an oil filter annoy me!

Fueltankerman has posted some stellar results using an el cheapo Supertech and el cheapo Havoline 20w-50 on his Harley.

I'm assuming that you mean people should purchase cars to keep pollution down by always running something newer and efficient, is this right?

That is part of it. But more specifically, I was trying to distinguish between other peoples' actions which do effect us (for instance needless idling which pollutes the common air) versus actions which don't reflect our personal values but effect us only marginally, if at all.

I hate waste myself, but I also know that you can waste thousands of dollars of time trying to save hundreds of dollars of material. If a person has a low earning power then it makes sense to "use up" a vehicle, but if the opportunity cost of their labor is high then it makes sense to pass the vehicle to someone who benefits from laboring on the vehicle instead of their job.

So spending $30K for a new car somehow is better than repairing a 10-12 year old vehicle, that lets say, needs and engine & transmission?

Last I checked Engines/Transmissions and labour doesn't come up to be that much.

Not being a jerk, just don't see the logic.

Also a car that is old doesn't have to be a polluter so long as it was looked after with proper maintenance. Sure it's not as efficient as the newest vehicle but it's only slight and if you offset the waste it creates sending it to the junk yard to sit, it weighs heavily in the favour of keeping/repairing the old car IMO.
