seen a old bottle of MOBIL Drive Clean in a clearance bin at a grocery store dated 2002 , think that was possibly an SJ .

About a year or two ago I bought a bottle of SG (!) rated GM brand 5W30 that was sitting all alone in some little independent auto parts store. I used it too. Cost me $2, which is cheap in Canada.

I'm using SJ-rated Havoline as top-up oil in my '02 Cavalier, and what shocks me is how much darker it is that more recent oil - I mean this stuff is coffee-colored!

SJ is still a relevant spec, so I have no worries about using it.....

I recently bought 9 quarts of Havoline semi-synthetic at Big Lots dated June 2003. Should work fine in my 2002 Impala where the spec was for SL rated oil.

For stashers, it depends on how soon you plan on using it. I try to use older stuff first. About 5 years ago, I bought a 34q load of SJ Superflo Semi-Syn for $.01c a quart. I'd still use it. I have M02 GC in my new car now and SL Havoline Synth on-deck. I think the rule could be that better oil lasts lobnger, even on the shelf and is much more appropriate to use after the made-date.

Got a load of SJ Pennzoil Synth. Use it all the time. My cars spec SH and SJ. I'm running redcap M1 15W50 right now in the SAAB.

I have a bottle of Valvoline All-Climate SAE 10w40 Motor Oil Turbo Approved SH Energy Conserving that I saw at Safeway in 2000 lonely on the shelf, during a period of controlled insanity I bought it for the same price as the current SM rated 10w40 on the shelf for $3.79 thinking I'd run it in a lawnmower, However apon opening it I came to the conclusion that the bottle is too darn pretty and retro-ish to open...

Do you think I should do a VOA on this stuff...

I remember Dad showing me how to do an oil change on an oil Ford F100 with bottles just like this in the mid nineties...

F126C1 on the back of the bottle with

1995 right after it says ASHLAND INC

ive got a few cans of motor oil thats in a cardboard can with a metal top. dont know how old they are but they have to be up there.

i wouldnt use it in my car but sence i wasnt able to sell them i plan on using it in my lawnmower.

while not directly car related it is an engine and oil, i had an old bottle of pennzoil outboard oil that was in a cardboard tube with metal top and bottom. i used that up in my 2 stroke hedge trimmer and it was fine. compression was the same before and after the oil so i dont think i hurt anything.

I would use oil based on the oil rating on the oil cap or the last spec SL. Anything before SL is at least 5 years old or more
