What are your winter oil plans?

2009 Hyundai Accent: Motomaster Formula 1 Full Synth (Shell product) 5W20.
2008 Honda CR-V: Whatever dino 5W20 is on sale (leased).
1991 Honda CRX: Stored in the winter, but will be using PP 10W30 for its next oil change.

I have used nothing but Mobil 1 0W20 for years, and see no reason to change..... except I switched to 0W30 for warranty purposes on my new ride which called for 5W30.

Changing oil weights is something we did in the 60s and 70s. There is no need to do that now. Use the weight your engine calls for year round.

I'll keep 5w20 in the mustang, and either put 5w30 or 10w30 in the Santa Fe.

I might dump the RL mix out and use straight 5W-30 RL, depending on how I feel, and the (usually inaccurate) low temp predictions for our area.

I don't/cannot use any 20 weights so I cannot comment on that (maybe if I move up to Barrow they would be my choice, along with a crankcase heater, etc.

).

I'll be changing over to the M1 0w-30 AFE in October, my summer fill is M1 10w-30 high mileage. We get some nights that drop down to -10 and the car turns over easy on 0w-30.

Just changed my oil yesterday...and this will be my winter... and summer fill.

Mobil 1 5W20 EP...(thanks tig 1). My OCI will be 1 year or 10,000 +/- (which ever comes first). Using a Mobil 1 oil filter.

Here in Central Oregon we have a few days in the winter where the temps go below 0F, but average in the mid-teens.

The '99 Accord will get M1 0W-30.
The '97 Accord will start a PP 5W-30 diet.
The Sube will get a fresh fill of GC.
The van will get Maxlife 5W-30.
The BMW will winter in the garage, although I will likely put a fresh fill of Delvac 15W-40 in it prior to storage.

Doubt I'll still own the toyota by Fall. Hope to have something that require either a 5w-20 or a VW Cert oil. If 5w-20 I'll run 0w-20 Toyota or Honda.

I plan on continued use of Amsoil 0W30 in my 2000 Taurus DOHC and 0W20 on the 2007 Fusion with the same engine . The GMC will likely get some 5W30 mobile 1 I already have.

We get some fairly cold weather here and I feel it very important to get that oil up to the DOHC's in the Fords . The 4.3 in the GMC is a whole different issue but of course synthetics do make cold cranks easier and give you better starts/less drain on the battery.

I've used XD3 15W40 and thought it did a pretty good job. It was my ARX carrier oil several years ago, and for a variety of reasons I used it as a summer oil instead of GC year round last year. I have nowhere to get XD3 0W30 but I can get XD3 0W40 at Walmart.

I'll check it's numbers again, but I have one possible concern going in to XD3 synthetics. M1 0W40 was definitely noisy in my BMW M52 and it was not a "slight" placebo effect. I ran it for 50,000km or so before learning better and switching to GC for relative silence.

I'm concerned that the "M1 noise" everyone posts about, and which I've read about and observed with other non-M1 oils, is actually a function of XOM PAO base stock. I'm reasonably certain that XD3 0W40 is PAO based, and I could end up with the same noisy base stock as M1 0W40 since it's an XOM product. Yes, it's all conjecture and I freely admit that, but I've read reports from people running T6 reporting exceptionally smooth and quiet operation.

Rest of the summer: Pennzoil Platinum 10W-30

Fall/Winter season: Pennzoil Platinim 5W-30 or Mobil 1 AFE 0W-30

Oil filter are Mobil 1 or Purolator purchases and used all year around.

By the way, I live in Fort Worth, Texas !

Just changed to Royal Purple 5w20 a couple of weeks ago. Will run it a full year till this time next year. Will put about 10,000 miles in that time frame.

Craig, do you know that one can easily order XD 0W30 from any Home Hardware? That is how I get my supply now. Very convenient.

It is (0w-30 also), it says so right on their pds.

I am going to run the last of my 0w-30 XD3 after the ARX cleaning and then try a few different ones. Starting with T-5 0w-30 then PC Duron 0w-30 and see what the 6.0L power stroke thinks of them all.

I know for sure that the 3.3L caravan makes a little more noise with the Super Tech 0w-30 but it still likes it it at -45C (and I have to use it up somewhere)

The Toyota truck will get Co-Op D-MO Gold 0w-40 from now on as it loves XD3 0w-40 but the co-op is cheaper and comes in 5L jug.

Still on the 0w's my Ford Fusion just loved the PC 0w-20 this winter when I was in the -45C weather this last winter. Great cold starts and much quieter than M1 5w-20
