What are your winter oil plans?

I live in NYC, which often drops below freezing. I will need an oil change by then. I was thinking about trying a 0w-20 in my car which calls for a 5w-20, just out of curiosity. If I understand correctly, it will flow slightly better in the winter months.

Which companies make 0w-20? I know Mobil does.. Anyone else?

What are your plans?

I'll stick with PP 5w20, or Ultra (if I can find it) We have some fairly cold winters here, 2 yrs ago, on our coldest night when it was around -20, the GMQ turned over fine with no start-up noise with the MC5w20 in her. Now if Ultra came out in a 0w20.....

Same as I run during the summer, good old 5w-30.

I try to change everything but the Corolla before it gets cold and since the Corolla gets so many miles it just gets changed when its due.

I did try 0w-30 last year (and still have a jug left) but no difference in my engine even at well below zero. (and my vehicle sits outside till 2-5am before going home from work)

I plan to stick with my current oil I am using now in the hot and soon to be hotter summer; Mobil 1 AFE 0w-30. 1 year or 10,000 miles, whichever comes first. I might do an oil change this Fall as this is my first run of this oil and it is already cleaning things nicely in the engine.

Question. Why does it always seems colder in the car than outiside when you first get in? lol.

Lately, mine has always been hotter on the inside, lol. I guess we see that shady area inside the car when outside of it and think, "Finally! Relief from the hot sun." Then we open the door and feel that hot air coming out and say BLEEP!

i'm running Redline 0w30 now and I'm still up in the air if I'll keep running it this winter OR I'll run Amsoils SSO 0w30

Mobil Synth 5W-40 went into my turbodiesel Navara in Jan, and will come out next Jan. Prolly going to snow tonight.

2 litres Castrol Magnatec SP 5W-40 and 2 litres Delvac 1 went into the E30 in Jan, plus a litre of Penrite 15W-50 last Friday, and will prolly come out when the business card says it's looking chunky.

Usually use Mobil 1 5W-30 but will be changing to Mobil 1 0W-30 this winter as we have moved to a colder area of Pennsylvania.

I stay with 0W-40 in my Explorer year round.

The MB diesel gets 5w40 in the winter, 15w40 the rest of the year.

Now that the Cavalier is pushing 190,000 miles, I may switch it to 5w40 or 0w40 year round rather than the 10w30 I have been using.

We're just about neighbors. In the 0W20 flavor, I'm running Edge, I've used PP 5w20, M1 0W20, and Amsoil 0W20. To be totally honest the Edge sounds the best in the 3.7L Jeep engine. I plan on sticking with it, unless PU comes out in a 0W20 with better specs, I'm not holding my breath though. I'm very happy with Edge. I'm equally happy with it in 5W30 as well. JMO

conventional 5w20 already is an awesome groups 2+ oil
if u want something "better?" then move to group 3 5w20
the cold properties of 5w20 already are awesome enough.

I think I'm going to stick with XW-30 in my Volvo. I keep thinking XW-40 is better in the white block Volvo, but really I have no strong objective data to back that up over the years. And IMHO, the engine is smoother and quieter with THINNER oils!

Typically we barely break 0F and 100F during the year. No reason to change from 5W20.

5W-20 used all year in my three cars. They will all get a fresh change sometime in October or November. The snowblower gets 5W-30.

And to the OP, thanks a lot for bringing up winter. I'm just now starting to enjoy summer.

I will say I did notice a difference in the Xterra running a 0w30 over a 5w30. My truck would sit on the weekend as we would take my wife's car around to save gas. In the Winter the truck sitting in the cold it would take several cranks for the engine to turn over.

The 0w30 would insta-crank the truck, but there would be a lot more engine/valve clatter than normal. You give and you get I suppose.

This winter I'm still not sure of what I am going to do. Probably going to substitue 1/2 a quart of conventional for MMO in the crankcase.

I've generally used GC in winter for years. I'm looking to switch to T6 year round this year but any time I've looked for it on the shelf in Canada (Canadian Tire, Parts Source, Walmart) it isn't there. Haven't looked for about a month.

Can you locate Petro Canada Duron E 0W-40 where your at. That would be an excellent oil to use in your applications.

Craig why not XD 0W30 or even 0W40?
