Naah, it really isn't.

That's about perfect. I have seen some lovely mostly discreetly located tattoos on a few people that can carry it off. Sadly the vast majority of folks with garish visible tats often seem to be insecure folks trying to fix something missing about their inside self by putting permanent ink pictures on their outside self.

My wife's best friend is covered with tattoos-neck to ankles, full sleeves on both arms. Most of her co-workers didn't know for YEARS that she had any tattoos. She is an AP-RN, an ER nurse.

Yeah, but a whole lot of people know better than you, eh ?

So it would seem! Lots of very conservative, holier than thou type people on this site - it is what it is

What did you expect from a forum browsed by a wide spectrum of people with differing viewpoints?. They are all wrong btw, except me. I am, as always, 100% correct.

Claud.

Tattoos are like graffiti - from the illegible monochrome squiggle to the side of a building covered in a cohesive mural, tattoos range from the letters H A T E on knuckles to a full coverage yakuza bodysuit.

All art is valid but some is more easily accessible. Some art is presented in context and some art makes no sense at all.

We can't know if the art reflects the person until we get to know them so judgment based on tattoos is foolish.

some random thoughts on tramp stamps. tattoos might just maybe belong on a male sailor (maybe a small anchor on one shoulder) with a back story about a 19 yr old’s first wild night in some far foreign port. based on what i saw in a 29 year career around the world tattoos are generally suitable for criminals, hood rats and prostitutes. tattoos become gross smudges with age. oh and why do i regularly see folks with ebt cards sporting tattoos? if you have money for ink why do you need my money for your groceries? tattoos, cigarettes, piercings and illegal drugs are dumb, ugly, unhealthy, disfiguring choices, and colossal wastes of money.

Why tarnish it? I'm sure it all starts because these girls have daddy issues are are "rebelling" but most of them don't know what they're rebelling against,or they saw it on MTV or something.

What's even worse is seeing all that on a woman my age (48).

You should probably see a qualified mental health professional to deal with your issues.

Sounds like I struck a nerve haha

I don't have any tatts. I doubt I ever will. I do watch "Ink master" and other tattoo tv shows to see what people end up with.

The lizard man went to a whole different level with body mods etc.

Beyond my personal views about tattoos my only other first person experience with them have been with relatives who have gotten them. Now I don't have many relatives with tattoos but to the best of my recollection every one wishes they didn't have at least one of them. These people are now in their 30s maybe early 40s and got them mostly in their 20s. I've never thought about that until this conversation. When my mother-in-law died one niece who was raised by her had her portrait done on her flank to honor Gram. Unfortunately it didn't look much like Gram when it was done and niece has gained substantial weight since then so I can't imagine what it looks like now. It's a shame and she's regretted it almost since she got it. Where they live I'm sure removal services is far away besides not being inexpensive. You have to wonder for how many is a tattoo a temporary desire with a permanent consequence? We change everything about our appearance many times through our lives. To do something that should be considered a permanent and forever addition to our body seems to run against our nature. Or maybe the permanence of it is the appeal? Interesting topic for sure.

If I was a legitimate, tuff bad [censored] ex military guy and had tattoos..... I would go undercover and join an outlaw biker gang that was manufacturing and distributing crystal meth.

Little would this bike gang know that I was part of a law enforcement task force with the U.S. Marshalls, FBI, ATF and the DEA.

I would look like a greasy scuzzy uneducated trailer park white trash as my gimmick to take down these criminals.

I think they look OK on alpha male type guys (even all out sleeved like Joe Rogan), but on women? NEVER. Doesn't matter where they are, they look disgusting. I agree with aquariuscsm on that one.

Our manager is from Zimbabae, and tattoos are not common there. They had a Kiwi come and work on his farm, and the natives were in awe of his tattoos, they had never seen it before. They do scaring - they cut the skin and put ash in the cut.

Some people probably don't like long hair on men...or short hair on women. What someone does with their body is no concern of mine...but I wish they'd pull their pants up.

Don't worry, they are balanced by other holier than thou types.

I find that holier than thou isn't reserved for either extreme. Both the extreme conservative and the extreme left (I won't call them liberal because if they are holier than thou, they are not liberal) seem to have plenty of candidates in the holier than thou camp to tell others what they should do, how they should act, spend their money, care for others, etc.

Personally, I'm not a fan. My daughters both have them. My concern is that they will not regret them in the future. But, so far, they are all in places where they can easily be covered without extreme measures.

There are people in the world who do judge, so I advised them to keep that in mind. That was met with, "but they shouldn't judge.'

I agreed, but then reminded them both that there are those who do, so figure that into your plans.

We can go back and forth and say what the world "should be" and become little different from other "holier than thou" types. Or we can make our choices and let others decide issues for themselves. Oddly, that's the true liberal view. Give people the freedom to decide how to spend their time, talent and treasure without others telling them what they should do. As long as they don't harm others or expect others to pick them up if they fail, we'll all get along just fine.

I think a few tasteful ones aren't bad, as long as they aren't visible in a professional setting. Face and neck as well as forearm are pretty trashy. I have a friend who has a rib cage tattoo and it looks pretty hot, she is also in very good shape and the tattoo is very well done. With that said she is not covered in them and when in work attire you would never know.

I worked with a guy who had full colorful sleeves and he had to wear long sleeve shirts even during the summer. They looked pretty bad if I'm honest.

I don't mind a few piercings on women. Ear piercings, a nose or tongue stud doesn't bother me. If your face is full of metal or you have those big holes in your ears then it looks pretty nasty. I'm also 27 though, so these things seem more common among my generation and the women I've dated.

My family has a strong and close Polynesian connection. Here tattoos are seen to have a strong cultural significance and they were around a long time before the first western person (Captain Cook) observed them.

The New Zealand Maori with a Moko or the Samoan Pe'a is in many ways a sign of respect awarded to you by your people. In the old days it was almost unheard of for a Matai (Samoan Chief) to not carry a tatau (tattoo) first, as this showed you had earned the respect of your community.

When I see an old man walking down the street with a Moko or Pe'a, to me it is like seeing a monk in robes, it is somebody who should be treated with respect. A good friend of mine was a school teacher in a area with a large Samoa community, some of the kids (who were way big for their age) were beginning to cause trouble. A school meeting with parents etc was held to address the issue, the meeting was becoming noisy and not going well. Then an old Matai walked in, turned to his people, said "this behaviour will now stop" and walked out again. All the trouble ended after that.

When I was in the army, I saw an infantry sergeant with tattoos that consisted of large arrows pointing to his brachial arteries with his blood group in a bold print beside the arrows. A true warrior tattoo.

I'm very sure that neither the army sergeant or the samoan chief have an any concerns of how their tattoos will look when they are 80 years old.

I'm a big supporter of body adornments of all and any type. I have none myself, as the Polynesian in me always asks myself - have I done enough for my society to deserve it ?

The only cutting this woman needs is the cancerous looking mole on her back and sent out for biopsy.

To do something that 'radical' and painful..... she definitely has some issues that need to be resolved.
