What are you working on today?

Mowed the lawn, got a couple boxes of junk out of the basement for the dump, cleaned out the washer and made dinner as the wife has sadly thrown out her back. Will be taking it easier tomorrow.

Truck got another V R&P oil change @4,400mls OCI, used the Fram Titanium I had on hand hopefully it holds up. This one said made in the USA. Also 5,000 hours on the engine which based on mileage equals 25.6 miles per hour of operation.

My first clockspring, on a Gen 3/2014 Prius
Symptoms were an intermittent airbag light/B1801, and inop cruise control

It's a work issued vehicle for him, and no one was interested in $450+ for an OEM Toyota part
I gambled $23.99 for a Chinese/eBay part
Took maybe 20 minutes, was very easy, the steering angle sensor transfered over easily
It all seems to work properly now 👍

Hauled two loads of rock this morning and quit around noon due to the heat. I think the heat index hit 112 for a while today. Supposed to me miserable the rest of the week too.

One of our brush trucks at the fire department (1994 Ram 2500 V10) wasn’t idling well or shifting right the last time I drove it so I had planned to put a throttle position sensor in it. I got the sensor today and as always it turned out worse than expected. The air filter had collapsed filling the throttle body and engine with ash, dust and everything else we can pick up while working grass fires. The IAC solenoid was completely stuck. New TPS, IAC and a ton of cleaning has it running better than it ever has in my time on the department. New air filter will be here in the morning.

A local shop is supposed to be keeping up with the maintenance on the trucks but obviously isn’t doing a good job. I’d say oil changes are all that’s being done.

With filters like that you could get a job as a local Picasso.

1999 Escalade:
-left exhaust pipe had simply torn apart at the "bell" flare for the collector attachment. He had previously had a buddy try a fix. Somehow this popcorn didn't hold up -- weird, right??

I got the whole thing on the bench, did some creative workholding, and welded it up

I even remembered to slide the retainer flange on first! Typically I'd forget something like this and then have a major Homer Simpson "DOH!".....but today was apparently a good day for my handful of brain cells

Once installed the weld lives in the ID of the retainer quite nicely:

He also had a loud driveline drone at highway speed. I ran it on the lift and heard a u-joint clicking and popping. After a few minutes of running on the lift I grabbed my temp gun and one cap of the offending joint read as high as 270! (had dropped to 240 by the time I snapped the photo). The other three caps were at 135F, and the other u-joint in that shaft was at 95F

Yep, the joint wasn't happy (had to cut it to aid in removal)

2017 Wrangler JK:
-left front wheel speed sensor inop. I had a sensor on hand just in case, but found the vehicle side connector had simply chosen to de-pin itself

Through dumb luck I found that Ford Triton (thank you dead, crappy 3V V10) fuel injector connectors are the same, and they don't have the red safety lock which I consider an UPGRADE.

Today there was a line at the frig 3 deep waiting on water.. my boys don’t wear deo when not at school… The little plunger on top broke off and the temp fix wasn’t working. Just took a drill bit to it. Problem solved till I want to replace the entire piece which might never happen.

Spent yesterday morning cleaning up/putting some test miles on my most recent Copart purchase: a 65k mile 2007 Cadillac DTS. Full on old man spec: black on black with a cabriolet top and all the chrome trimmings. I still need to get better pictures and I'll post in the Vehicles sub.

While changing the oil in our WJ last weekend, I noticed that all four corners were getting low on pad material and the rotors looked... sad. I spent the rest of yesterday installing a bunch of RA's finest closeout brake parts: Napa Proformer front rotors with "Prostop Platinum" pads (that ended up being Bosch's of some type) and CQ premium rear rotors with Duralast Gold pads. Inside the DL box was a funny note informing me that "I'd been randomly upgraded to Duralast MAX brake pads at no charge!" Guess it was my lucky day!

Came back inside ready to cool off, only to quickly notice that our HVAC wasn't cooling at all. Thermostat showed 79 degrees, interior and exterior fans running fine. I went outside and felt the lineset: ambient. Great... no compressor. Luckily, last night cooled off enough to make sleep possible and I was able to source a new capacitor at my local Ace Hardware today on my lunch break. Slapped it in when I got home from work and we're back in business. Only got 6 years out of the original.

6 years seems short for a capacitor, but maybe not? I know I’ve had to replace enough to wonder if I should simply go ahead and buy a spare to keep on hand.

2008 LMM Duramax: sick of the P0087 for my non-profit, finally deleted the fuel pressure relief valve.
