What are you working on today?

Yeah. I was miffed because one of the house brand u-joints had a defective zerk fitting that allowed grease to escape past its check ball.
IME the bottom end house brands have fewer needles that are larger and poor seals. They're often worn out in less than a year. Since they're ALWAYS greaseable (sigh) you might be able to prolong life with ULTRA DILIGENT greasing (like once a month), but no one does that.

I think it's a clue that OEMs use high quality non-greaseable joints (Toyota excepted) -- they know the joints won't get greased regularly and they'd see FREQUENT failures within the warranty period, making them look bad if they used greaseable.

Toyota found the magic sauce to make greaseable joints that still last, specifically the older ones with the big square block zerk dead center of the cross.

I'm discovering Tub O Towels works pretty well on a greasy stove top, esp if you use LP and I'm assuming NG is similar.

Just don't tell the wife.

Recovering from back surgery. Doing physical therapy by applying Collinite 845 over Jescar Ultra Lock + on my 03' Toyota Solara. Then as the Colinite dries, I'm putting Adam's Ceramic coating over my 06' Camry. Then take it all off when dry. Then I'm shot for 20 hrs. Don't want to get atrophy in any muscles, so I'm trying to do SOMETHING before the " REAL" physical therapy starts.

I serviced the trans in the '17 Taco today. I will say every other time I've done standpipe transmissions, it's been during the cooler months and I've had to let the vehicle idle 15-20 minutes to hit correct ATF temp.

Today it was ~83F in the shop and that was kinda nice to not have to wait very long to pull the check plug.

This is total $500 worth of front and rear rotors and pads for some big wigs company car. She never dropped car off so it will be done Sunday morning. I hate the stupid electronic parking brake; smdumbest thing ever thought of 🤬🤬🤬

Kohler LH775, bent pushrod.

View attachment 289185

Moved the gasser Toro Workman to the ranch a few days ago for repairs. Staying here during the week to trap some feral cats, get them fixed and rereleased.

Started tearing down the cylinders head, almost there. The exhaust is preventing me from removing the head, and 1 exhaust nylon nut is stripped at the frame. I didnt bring an angle grinder with me and I don’t want to cut the exhaust pipe. Next week the offending nut will be sliced. The pushrod doesn’t look severely bent and gives me a little hope that further damage is limited, probably the hydraulic lifter became stuck or valve guide is pushed out.

RMS on '95 ZJ with 5.2

Once I got it apart I wonder if the oil pan gasket wasn't leaking as much as or more than the RMS.

I added the arrows to show the owner how it came apart vs the new pan gasket in foreground

Oh, whoever put the 02 sensor connector WAY up the side of the transmission in a narrow trans tunnel deserves a swift kick to the genitals. Major PITA.

Different from the usual mechanical fiddling....

For the renovated lake house. I had come across a salvage porthole from a Great Lakes freighter a few years ago and gave up on using it on an exterior wall mostly due to code issues. Wife found a 100+ y/o cabinet and we thought of a good solution appropriate for the Cape.

First step was gluing the frame and stabilizing the cracked panels in the door followed by creating an ersatz compass for scribing the circle. The fixture has a generous flange so close enough was good, but the two holes in a paint stirrer trick worked a treat. My full toolset is at the main place, so I had to improvise a bit. I also found the original small brass builders plaque that I later put below the porthole. Fun.

I'll probably add interior lighting and shelves, or???

Tried clear coat in a spray can for the 1st time on a car bumper. Touched up the paint with a brush tip applicator ( looks terrible ), Prepped the bumper with Prep Solv, then started sraying. Came out terrible too. I don't even care. It's a P.O.S. I'm giving to my daughter when she starts driving soon. I can just imagine what she's gonna do to the car. LOL :)..." Oh Daddy, I scraped a hydrant while trying to park my car, can you fix it ??? Sorry, can't help you out kid. Go on Scamazon , buy an " OUCH " sticker, and slap it over the dent/scrape..:)

No pictures but did some overall maintenance and inspection on the brakes for our new to us Featherlite 3 horse bumper pull.

They had been a bit weak and yesterday they were nonexistent. Pulled them all apart, did a little bearing repack (grease was good), used some antiseize on the shoe pivot points and removed/cleaned/lubed the adjusters.

Two of four adjusters were seized and all four were out of adjustment. Each had about four threads showing and after adjusting, closer to ten.

On the test, the passenger side came alive, albeit weak. So tomorrow I will clean the connector at the truck and try to locate the grounds.

Finished up on the 3 horse(for the time being). Cleaned the 7 pin connector, which had a bunch of gunk and corrosion. Three of four brakes work decently now. I dug into the wiring but could not find the ground.

If the rain doesn't start soon, I will continue work on the 6 horse.

Rear drum brakes including new wheel cylinders, hoses and brake fluid flush on my nephew's 05 Escape. I'm also going to install a new transmission cooler and do a fluid exchange while I'm at it.
The degas bottles crack and cause a leak so check that for giggles. The water pumps weep and are down really low and VERY hard to see the drip. Well, at least on the 3.0
