What are you working on today?

Yeah I should have taken a picture but I was so mad it didn’t occur to me. It looks like someone replaced the sway bar end links and had to cut them off and cut into the sway bar with a cutting wheel. The ball joints were original from 2013 but didn’t show any signs of failure when I worked on it or the state inspector looked at it. Car has like 140ish thousand on it I think now.

Makes sense now, Fresh steel would have me questioning things, It would flash rust pretty quick without driving through water.

I'd take my lumps on the ball joint, And push back on the sway bar as it wasn't you that cut it.

Back charging you another mechanics time is wrong, You should be allowed to correct the mistake!

Replaced several of these old Leviton 15A outlets that ONLY have backstab connections. That's a first for me. Replaced with commercial grade Leviton 15A outlets with side and back wiring.

Ugh...I have these all over my house. Good call on replacing with commercial. I'm having trouble finding them lately locally. You get them at a supply house?

Got the box of 10 at Home Depot. These: Leviton Commercial Grade 15A outlets
I think I'm on my 4th box......they used THE worst child proof outlets here. As in NO ONE allowed to plug anything in. Terrible design. Then when you finally get the plug in, the outlet poops the bed completely. I was doing them as they broke and that even became stupid, so I went all Tim Allen, room by room.

Not my project, thankfully, but I figured I'd share some engine goodness. This is out of a JD 9410R. Something like $72k for a reman. engine plus labor 😮

Strange for a new car dealer to mess with a 12 year old POS with 140,000 miles....That's a cash car or a buy here/pay here style dealer.
We have everything. Cash cars are cars we sell cheap and won’t finance them because they are priced low enough that they want people to come with the money. That’s what this one was. This one almost got red dotted 🔴 meaning we would send it to the auction but they chose to fix it instead. I wish they would have sent it to the auction.

Been some years since I've worked in a dealer service department so this might be a common thing now?

You know.....It sucks to get blasted over something so small, Long as it hasn't been a reoccurring problem?

What other trade treats it's people this way? Let's say a Plumber misses something on an inspection.....Does the company send another Plumber out to fix the issue & back charge the guy that did the inspection?
Even the accepted method of expecting a Mechanic to eat it & work for free is near unheard of in other trades/professions!!

Replaced headlights on '95 ZJ. They use the dumbest ball and socket setup that is pretty much a one-way street -- pop 'em together and good luck getting it apart. This would be fine if the female plastic sockets were readily available, but they're pretty much unobtainium and have been as early as 2007 from threads I found.

There does appear to be one guy 3D printing them now, but it woulda been ~$40 and a full week out. I was able to get new TYC lenses for $27 ea and they come with clips.

To be fair one style of the clips is still available as Auveco 23895, but that only gets you one of three retainers per lens.

Also got the a/c charged up thanks to @Chris142 and she's blowing 40-45 at the vents

LOVE THESE ZJs!!!

Didn't work Tuesday, shop was closed for the bosses birthday. Monday and yesterday I finished up my first batch of hydro boost units. I pressure tested 10 of the 11 I worked on, all ten plus the one the area lead tested while I watched held 1500 psi of hydraulic pressure and did not leak. Ran out of ISO 32 hydraulic fluid briefly and went back to the lathe to deburr some steel spacers. Most of the day yesterday was testing the hydro boost units.

Some salesman took the car home and did some sweet jumps or something. March into your boss's office and get your paycheck fixed. YOU don't warranty cars, the boss does, and he does it with the price spread between the $170/hr the customer pays and what he's underpaying you. The car passed state inspection right after you looked at it. Tell him fix your check or you're out of there, and act uncharacteristically like a loose cannon when you do. Chargebacks ARE negotiable, a human decided it was your fault instead of a loss the company should cover, and if you eat it this time you'll do it again.

Guarantee with this being the biggest beater on the lot the boss thought he could loan it to some bozo 16 year old he didn't really trust for the weekend because it was the cheapest thing and he had the least to lose.

'95 ZJ with obnoxious popping in driver's door when opening or closing. I finally glanced at it and, uh, yeah that's not a factory spec air gap ;)

Protect the interior and my deteriorating eyes need LIGHT (this must be what the wife means when she says I'm not too bright?)

The door now operates SOOOOOO much better. I was unwilling to commit to a full bead not knowing how thick the sheetmetal was, so I stacked tacks starting at the old weld (thick) and pulling to the door sheetmetal (unk thickness)

Exhausted and not even hard work. Container was to be delivered today.. and they bumped up the tractor delivery to today also. While waiting filled the RV water tank. Rest of the water filled the sprayer and sprayed couple acres. Fixed the RV table and tinkered with the bedroom fan, nut disappeared but found one at home. Both deliveries were late but worked out perfectly. Tractor was dropped off the container less than 10 min later. Had to leave so haven’t leveled it yet. Going put a lean to on that side for tractors, eventually a door and couple windows. Don’t think I need to paint it! Perfect color.
