What are you working on today?

After the team penning weekend wrapped up, I rolled my daughter's Escape into the shop. Took no time to rip it down and pop the bearing out.

I knocked the hub out and used the new bearing remover for the actual bearing. Worked slick as snot and I ain't lying.

Tomorrow I'll roll into town and snag a new bearing.

Epic battle with the high pressure steering hose replacement on the '98 K2500. I spent HOURS on it which I realize is ridiculous. It was the sunk cost fallacy, plus I'm stubborn.

I was bending the hardline by heating it, but still I never got it to where it would thread in at the box. I verified the threads in the box were good using the old fitting, and twice I ran a die over the hose fitting just to be sure. It was always sooooo close which is what kept me coming back for more punishment, but it just never fit.

After ALL THAT I still lost! Going to AutoZone tomorrow.

@dogememe if you're still at O'Reilly don't sell this hose to anyone. Ever. Check out the reviews at the website -- numerous people with my experience.

Sadly I think I’ve sold that same one a million times 😂 I’m not laughing at what you went through just at what you wrote on the package.

Went to Napa to exchange the Escape's wheel bearing. As luck would have it, they now had the SKF bearing and hub in stock. I paid the difference and walked away. She went into the freezer for a bit and slid into the hub like butter with that install tool. I'll let if warm up for a bit and install the hub.

Retrieving the next projects.. or scrap maybe. The old Craftsman did run but leaked old bad. That was 20 years ago. The small trailer will be the yard cart. Some have too big of a truck.. guess I’m evening out the average by having too small.

Bought a 8 inch auger for the Predator earth auger.. So far the best thing I’ve bought.

The speedometer has been jumpy in the 626 for quite awhile. However, two days ago it was not only jumpy but howling. Ok, time to bite the bullet and change it out. I've had two in stock for a long time but that new noise if too much. Don't forget the hidden screw holding the dash fascia on. There is always a hidden screw. Then there is threading it through the firewall with it wanting to go in a direction you don't want it to go. A helper would be nice to sit inside. Nevertheless after about 90 minutes the job was done.

So not that you really care, but just to tie this off: the AutoZone hose fit beautifully. I had both ends connected working alone in about 8 leisurely minutes.

In contrast, I spent hours with the poorly built O'Reilly hose and needed my wife to help me connect the hose at the pump (the steering box side simply can't connect because the hardline is bent so wrong).

In looking at part numbers, the Precision at O'Reilly is a Sunsong, while the Duralast is Edelmann. As of right now, AutoZone's description on their website even says Edelmann.

So easy to connect at the pump, all by myself like a big boy! The steering box side was only 5% more difficult

edit: O'Reilly's site is riddled with similar reviews, while AutoZone's has reviews like "fit when competitors' did not"

If you have time for it, when you go in to return the O'Reilly part, ask for the store manager, explain the situation, show them the reviews on the website, and ask them to submit a product alert describing the issue. Who knows if anything will change, but it's worth a shot.

Right now, I'm getting organized for a small photography project and laying the groundwork for developing a recipe for Peri Peri chicken. I just returned from taking a neighbor to drop off her car at a repairshop in a nearby community. Awaiting delivery for my new microwave oven.

Replacing the bumper shield and engine shield, both under 2016 Cmax. Could not figure how to push in the 2 push connectors at the front as no way to apply pressure on top of the shield. I am guessing I would have to remove the front body piece to gain access. I installed captive fasteners on top of the bumper shield (front shield) and will run machine screws from the bottom.

My Lexus RX330 has a horribly cracked dash. This is a common occurrence in these. Lexus had a recall for it, but the prior owner didn’t get it done.

New one from dealer is $800.

Spent four hours yanking out what looks like a new dashboard from a serviced RX330 at the junkyard. Score at $100.

Still have yet to put in the new one.

I worked on my 2002 Pontiac Sunfire rez rocket today. Its a 270,000km beater we got for cheap. Today I put in some new plugs as the previous owner, who likely was one of many, said they needed to be done. I'm not sure when if ever they were done.... two of the four were quite cooked to say the least.

I wasn't going to do a pan drop and filter change, it's just not worth my time. I disconnected the top cooler hose and did a fluid exchange with 10 litres of fresh dex 3. I'll test her out in a day or two.

Next is to break the rear drums free to inspect the wheel cylinders. The bleeders are rusted in and the driver side locks up really easy.

The rear brakes were all kinds of messed up on the 2000 Cavalier I service. Good thing is they're easy and since it's all small stuff it's inexpensive. I'd reco just doing a full brake job including drums and don't bother trying to salvage anything.

Nice work! Honestly $800 from the dealer seems cheap. I'd expect $1700 or more. But at $100 you've got enough left over for a well-earned steak dinner
