What are you working on today?

Work faster?

Dry off the vehicle using drying towels. Do not wash in direct sunlight.
Don’t know about working faster.. I did use the HF drying towel and worked good on the body, not so much on the windows. Just have to clean them separately. Neighbor cut down the tree so don’t have any options for shade now.

Kind of a weird CV boot failure on a Trakmotive axle I installed circa April '23. Vehicle is a '98 CRV

Initially I just assumed the boot outright failed, which would NOT be surprising as I've had Trakmotive stuff fail in much LESS time

Upon inspection with the boot in hand I could NOT find a tear to save my life. I was combing over it with nitrile gloves and my headlamp. In revisiting the pic above, I'm thinking it was somehow coming out the inner edge, although that inner clamp seemed plenty snug when I clicked it apart, and the boot appeared properly seated on its flange. It will remain a mystery.

All I could get on short notice was a Dorman unifit. I dunno, it's a boot. It'll work. Maybe. For awhile.

Never really post work stuff.. Changed one panel out like this, our best contractor did this one ours was easier. We hang the old panel out and slide the new behind. Change the programming and doors are down only a few minutes max. Did hundreds this way. Later we changed two GCMs.. the brains.. due to the SD cards failing. Use a old Linux laptop to image new cards and good to go. Apparently I’ve did more than I thought, Kingstons and Panasonic didn’t last long. The factory swissbit seems to be lasting longer, I put in Sansdisk extremes.

Nothing too interesting — replaced the engine oil and filter on my sister’s 2025 Forester.

Oil filter and drain plug gasket are unchanged from prior generations, but the revised FB25 engine calls for a different quantity and viscosity of oil: 4.7 qts of 0W-16.

2006 Trailblazer 4.2 owned by local business. It started throwing a fan clutch code so they had an indy replace fan clutch.

A few months later it was doing it again -- indy said bad fan clutch and warrantied it. A month later it was doing it again.

The owner is a friend of mine and gave up, asking me to fix it. I said all I know is to use only OEM, and most likely the indy used whatever AutoZone or NAPA had readily available.

Sure enough the existing clutch was a Hayden. The code was a P0495 Fan Speed High. I installed a GM Genuine and cleared the code but still need to test drive.

Fixed a problem on the Dadwagon (2010 VW Passat long roof) that had me beating my head against a wall for a while. Car would lock with either of both keyfobs, but would not unlock. Rear hatch would open consistently, so I ended up devising a rather redneck way of getting inside the car. Used paracord to rig a line to the inside rear passenger door handle and ran it to the rear cargo area. Open the hatch, pull on the cord to open the handle, enter the car and reach forward to unlock the driver's door from the inside switch. Exit through the rear and then re-enter into the driver's side. Really funny to watch, but annoyed the hell out of my wife to deal with if we went somewhere in my car.

Scanned the convenience module and all was good. Keyfobs would display an RF signal when any button was pushed except unlock. Scoured the net and found several results that referenced resetting the fobs. How do I do that? Well, it was as simple as putting the battery back into the fob upside down so the base would contact the + and - simultaneously, thus shorting them together. This dumps the tiny capacitor on the PCB to give it a "fresh" start. Thought it was BS until I tried it. Now both fobs work like they should and all functions are restored. Gonna miss not having to do some acrobatics and contortions to get inside the car. REALLY gonna miss not annoying Mrs. ShortyB though. Thats ok, she'll soon find something else I do to be annoying. Like breathing 😁.

Replaced the radiator ('92 Century) (great deal from Amazon) and the short, silicone, 3/4" hose between the heater return pipes over top the exhaust cross over. I'll reinstall the fan after I'm positive the twin transmission cooler pipes aren't leaking at the fittings. Good weather and wanted to change the oil too, but it's too much for me at once.

2015 GX460: was asked to find a water leak. I know sunroof drains are notorious but the windshield was leaking. I was finally able to find if I blew air from the inside and held a thin strip of paper outside I could get the paper to move every time

Ran both the generators for awhile, got a nice little fire going in the fireplace.

2006 Silverado. Had the creaking steering with only 93k miles. You could hear it and feel it both in the wheel and a little in your feet. First I tried the hose clamp trick

but that did nothing. I should have started with what I did next, which was to just douse the bearing at the firewall with WD40. Problem solved -- for now. I think this truck is going to my sister, so it can be her problem if it returns. She's not smart enough to use me for vehicle service, so she can pay another shop big bucks to overcharge her (shrug)

Then disabled driver seat belt chime by simply unplugging at the belt. Now I can check my mail in peace!

Replaced upper oxygen sensor and also let old on soak in Gumout Multi-system and it did remove some deposits. Sensor was removed and new installed cold. Torqued to 33 lbs, gonna keep the old one in box just in case. Probably had over 200,000 miles on it, no CEL were thrown. Was cool outside but sun was on me at times, that helps. Safe travels, happy holidays too.

Interesting one today. 3.7 came in for heavy oil leak front of engine. Found the front cover was broken because the mounting studs for the engine mount (which was also completely worn out) were not fully tightened or back out from the last engine mount replacmeent when they removed the mounting nuts. 2 studs ended up bending and broke the front cover. While it’s apart it’s getting water pump, chain and guides (tensioner was near full extended). Also found 1 intake phaser was not locking, and discovered worn/broken secondary chain guides. So it will be getting 1 phaser (all they wanted to do) and secondary chain tensioners with guides.
