What are you working on today?

Replaced brushes on alternator. 225k, other stuff broke at the same time, don't feel like having a stranding disaster. Alternator, we'll see how it goes from here on out. Some oil has gotten on the fan but I'm not sure the oil has actually gotten into the alternator. I'm definitely not the fastest guy. Took maybe 2-4 hours because of cleaning and stuff.

My non-profit's '19 Rebel was regularly throwing the messages about Parksense Temporarily Unavailable and Service Shifter.

Perusing Ram forums, it seems these messages often appear together(ish). I cleaned the bumper/body sensors but this wasn't the issue.

Anecdotally it also seems high ambient temps often -- but not always -- cause the issue to appear. We were having a brief heat wave for our area, so this may have been a factor.

Some owners reported success by simply re-seating the connectors at the Parksense module behind the left kick panel.

Our director was leaving for TN (starting from home here in CO) so I decided to at least try re-seating the connectors -- there's three: black, blue and gray -- and I added a supplemental ground as shown.

I didn't see any reason to fault the existing ground, but another can only 1) do nothing or 2) help (by some miracle)

Our director took three days to drive to TN through temps I have to imagine were greater than we were experiencing here in CO and the issue has not yet reappeared.

It's too soon to say conclusively that the problem is resolved, but early indications are positive (shrug)

replaced the headlight bulbs (9005) in my 2005 GMC Yukon Denali...I had to replace the DRL bulbs last week and those bulbs appeared to be OEM...I had noticed the headlight bulbs also appeared original and thought for the low price delivered from RockAuto.com a set of long life bulbs from a known brand (Philips) was worth buying "just because" those OEMs might be 19 years old.

...those new bulbs from RockAuto.com were about a buck fifty less than any bulbs I could find locally and none of the local bulbs were listed as long life or vibration resistant...

...the new bulbs "appeared" to be slightly brighter than the old headlight bulbs...maybe...;)

Monday
1993 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 4wd
Replaced left tail lamp circuit board, brake light and tail light bulbs, tag light bulbs, front universal joint on primary driveshaft, changed oil and rotated tires.

2013 GMC Acadia
Replaced right outer tie rod, right front CV axle, changed oil

Tested positive for covid this morning, don't feel that bad but we'll see if I make it to the shop today or not.

I don’t know pounds 😅

But it is rated for 45 metric tons of payload, can probably take 55 just as good.

New diff is around 26k USD before labour but a complete axle is around 90k before labour
AFAIK a metric ton is ~2200lbs so yeah, 45x2200 =99k

Call it 100k payload for easy math.

The diff looks like a spool? Does it differentiate?

Never opened one of these but Volvo doesn’t call them differentials they call them central transmissions so maybe not the same. It has a crazy complicated auto diff locking system for all three axle which is what we think broke it.

(Looked up what a spool is, yes the truck does differentiate. I’m Swedish so not the best at knowing what everything is called in English vs Swedish)

It thinks it is spinning due to uneven tires and just slamming the diff locks on and off all the time.

Also we know that the people who drive for this company do not threat them with respect, it is full throttle or full break, changing from forward to reverse while in motion and such, I think it has 9k hours on it.

Was supposed to just be an oil change on '07.5 Cummins. But I noticed his tensioner pulley had weird "bubbles" and the belt looked questionable.

He leaves for a road trip tomorrow so I opened my big mouth.

I will say, this was one of the bigger PITA serps I've done (that didn't outright require removing the front clip or bend-over mode aka service mode).

Everything wanted to fight me. I finally rigged up a way to pull my serp tool with a ratchet strap to MAX out the tensioner travel and then barely got the belt on.

Weird bumps on old tensioner pulley. Bearing was dry but spun free, like dry skateboard wheels. These bumps left corresponding wear lines in the back (smooth side) of the belt.

I spent WAY too long on a 6.7 belt. If I were flat rate I'd unquestionably be fired. I think I'm just incompetent.....

I both celebrate my teammates who think like this, and also duck and run for cover, while keeping my hands protecting my head and eyes at the same time, depending on which teammate it is! In this case, full hand clap applause for ingenuity.

Kinda boring today at work. Not much to do. But I felt really good today about yesterday so I just kinda chilled but also tried to find work because the last thing I want is management to see me sitting on my tail after a $4 raise. My manager also pulled me aside to ask if I needed anything else I said no sir the money is all. Then we talked for about 40 minutes about my performance and willingness to help and how I’m liked around the shop. He said he would bump me up again if I get my state inspection license. I’ve already tried to take the test 4 times and passed all the times just get too nervous in front of the cop that I have to do it in front of and fail that part. At that point I’ll be really happy because I’d be about where I really would like to be. He understands I can’t do flat rate just not fast enough because I’m always getting pulled by the express techs for questions or help. I think they ask me because I’m young and not as intimidating to them as older guys. But still I enjoy it a lot so it makes me happy. And needless to say I really enjoy what I do.

Tomorrow fixing the incompetent lube techs screw up though. He had a drain plug come out of a Tundra luckily customer stopped in time before damage was done. This is now his 13th ( I think, I’ve lost count) come back with something messed up. He also messed up the glove box in a Land Cruiser today too. I think it’s time for an ice cold beer on Friday or Saturday lol. I just hope the work picks back up because the time goes slow when there is nothing to do.

Congratulation's on the bump in pay!!

Sounds like equipment owners and operators everywhere.
"Let's make those tires last until next quarter. No money in the budget for that."
"Gotta get that job done before quitting time."

You're just a guy doing his job. The police officer is just a guy doing his job. Nothing special or scary about either one of you. Doing the job in front of the police officer is no different than doing it in front of a customer, a coworker, a relative or anyone else. Just a thing to be done.

Appreciate the heads up. You've made sure I won't ever do one 😄
