What are you working on today?

Going up on the roof with tarps.

Storm hit on the 31st and ripped up dozens of shingles and tore open the roof vents. Which explains the water intrusion in several spots.

My house is only 3-1/2 years old, so it’s not like it’s an old, old roof. Insurance pressed me on that, but they can’t win that one. The guy I talked to knew it too (since he said so). 😎

Another rain is coming in the next day or two, and the adjuster is backed up until 8/16. 🫤

used a laser level to find the top post height, marked them all, set a declining slope between the three rows. The combination of the tractor, a pallet cage, and stairs made putting up 10 header boards pretty easy. The heat got the me about 2pm. Happy with progress.

The past few weeks, All the header boards installed and some 45 degree braces.

I put two 4x6x16s in the center, poking out about 3-4 feet on each end. I will want to hang things, or use it for hoisting. Started on rafters with hurricane ties this morning. It was oppressively hot and humid.

Monday

2012 GMC Yukon Denali XL 6.2 Vortec V8
Replaced heater hoses and connectors, replaced air filter, replaced headlight bulbs, changed oil

Finally just took a few minutes to work on my own junk today and checked the charge on my '11 F350 6.2.

I knew it was low because it blew barely cool at idle, and has been that way for years. It took a whole 12oz can and pressures are better.

It was blowing "in the zone" of my vent thermometer so I stopped. I think it could have afforded a little more but I didn't feel like cracking open another can. Will see how it performs today.

Got the camper ready for staff to stay on site. Off to a horse show, so had lots of odds and ends to fix.

Mounted more D rings in our trailer to strap in more feed and other things. The front and mid tack filled up and the horse compartment went from 6 down to 4.

I had used eternabond to reseal the roof seams, which works wonderfully but found rain water leaking hay pod mounting bolts. I had to tighten two but one rubber seal is compromised. I'll look for new fasteners and seals.

Spent the afternoon waiting for UPS to deliver the last few pieces I needed to complete my Cadillac's audio upgrade. All in all, I'm very happy with the results:

Not much to look at, but that was the idea. Behind the scenes, I used Metra harnesses to create my own "T"-harness which connects between the original radio and this unit:

Audiozerone 500w Marine Amplifier

I wanted a completely self contained unit, and this little guy fit the bill perfectly. I also wanted to keep the original radio fully functional, so I took it's outputs and ran them into a line-out converter. The LOC outputs low-level signals to the AUX input of the amplifier, allowing me use of the tuner and 8-track player.

The amplifier, the LOC, and all the wiring fit in the cavity behind and to the left of the radio, allowing for a seamless installation. I'm still using the 45 year old factory speakers, so there's room for improvement there, but for now it's a massive improvement over an FM transmitter and 7 watts of power.

Total cost: $106.52. Half the cost of the cheapest Retro Sounds unit.

2009 BMW 328i

Spark plugs, cabin filter, front brake hoses, 4 corner brake flush, oil change

Hardcore tech: changed the cabin air filter in my JL for the first time in ~52k miles.

I don't think much of cabin air filters and wanted to pay absolute bottom dollar. I found one on Amazon for $8.88 which was the least expensive I could find (you might do better on RA only if you can combine shipping)

The original was quite dirty

The new one came with a creepy card (and possible copyright infringement). Chinese companies are funny. And school buses are yellow.

L83 5.3. Came in for misfire on cylinder 7. Performed a compression test and found sufficient cranking compression 150-160 psi) but the dynamic compression was less than 10. Indicates a problem with the intake valve. Pulled engine and found that the DOD lifter failed, broke the retainer for the lifters and spun on the cam and damaged the cam. This truck (2018 Tahoe) only has 72,000 miles, but has 11,700 engine hours. Elected to overhaul the engine. Mains are worn front upper and all lowers), and crankshaft has marks on it on several mains easily caught with a nail. The rod bearings and rod journals were in good condition. The cylinders were also worn as are piston skirts. All oil control rings were seized in ring land with carbon build up. The engine did use oil by the condition of the plugs.
