What are you working on today?

More repairs on Cub Cadet. How long has he been running with trashed bushings??? No idea!
20240727_090233.webp

I took the good bushing from the other side and copied in 6061. Do I think aluminum is a great idea? NO. But he wanted me to bandaid it back together and I think Delrin will collapse and nylon will crack, given the condition of the spindle

Installed and lubed

More wrenching today, made even better with 70° dewpoints and 90° ambient temps 🙄

In-laws 2006 Caravan came in for a front motor mount and front struts. Pops showed up with nice Monroe quick struts and Mevotech Supreme links, so no qualms on my end RE: part quality. I ordered the motor mount from RA, the cheapest one they had on closeout. The van just rolled 170k, no need for anything more.

I helped my buddy with his '85 square body. He swapped a steering column then it wouldn't start. He was baffled and then swapped in a different column, changed his starter, tried two ignition switches and even wired up a momentary button (he couldn't even get the latter correct and I did not troubleshoot his button).

He has zero diagnostic skills, obviously. I kept asking about the NSS and he kept ignoring me or saying it was fine. Well, there is no NSS, but I believe there was prior to his "work."

He also looked under the dash and said there were no unused connectors. I then climbed under the dash and found three unused connectors.

I don't know Chevy wiring well but a five second internet search shows PPL & YEL being the NSS. I found that unused connector and jumpered and it starts from the key just fine. HEAVY SIGH.

He's been baffled for weeks wondering why his truck won't start.

You said it when you said he has ZERO diagnostic skills. Those folks I tread lightly with and demand cash upfront

1993 Volvo 240 wagon, 212,xxx

Getting ready for our trip to the Badlands, Black Hills/Custer and Rocky Mountain National Parks.

Removed radiator for cleaning. Cleaned the condenser and AT cooler. Cleaned the thermostat housing, Flushed the coolant. New hoses and clamps.

I've had quite a bit in the past couple weekends
2020 Elantra, 2.0 Nu/IVT
57k, neighbor complains of check engine light and rough running
He also requests a front pad slap, no rotors 🙄
Oh, and the LF headlight doesn't work 🤔

Out came these mid Champion/Yura plugs, in went some proper NGKs
Cylinder 3 looks like it had a coil swapped under warranty or during the engine replacement a year ago
1000012941.webp

1000012952.webp

1000012938.webp

Swap the air filter, clean the MAF and TB
Monitor misfire data
1000012928.webp

Gave it back, 1 week later it's back with the same cylinder 3 misfire
These 2.0 Nu ignition coils were problematic in earlier MYs, but this '20 still has the defective design as per a TSB
That's it, it's getting a coil
I wanted the new/improved design, but without the $120+ list price

WVE was a fail, Chinese made earlier failure prone design
1000012925.webp

Beck Arnley was a rare W on this job, exactly new and improved Hyundai part in the box for only $50 🫡
1000012926.webp

If you have a 2.0 Nu, you want the improved design (left)
1000012927.webp

So, to recap
Bottle of techron in the tank, air filter, TB/MAF clean, new NGK plugs and 1 new ignition coils got it running 💯

Front pads got slapped with Hella/Pagid silver pads, they fit beautifully and stop quite nicely
It was time 🧐
1000012930.webp

Accident damage/lousy TYC parts, plus some ham fisted LED install resulted in multiple wiring issues
Crimped on a new bulb socket, I wanted to repin the connector, but it didn't arrive in time, so I bypassed it and covered it with Super 33+ and a layer of Tesa tape over the heat shrinked crimp connector with weatherproof good
I like a belt & suspenders approach with wiring repairs
It ain't pretty, but it's all he wanted/would pay for
1000012942.webp

1000012943.webp

1000012929.jpg

Junkyard TYC parts, the hallmark of the slipshod "I'll save your deductible cuz" insurance job 🙄
1000012944.jpg

This turn signal kept taking on water, gave it a relief hole 🫣
1000012931.jpg

This car was butchered, I hate that 🙄
Drove it hard for an hour or two, sat in some traffic
Took it for a car wash to see if it was moisture sensitive
1000012932.jpg

Seems fixed, been a week and he says it's running well 👍
I advised him that if this happens again, we're treating it to the other 3 improved coils

A German transportation appliance, on my driveway ⁉️ 🤨
2021 Jetta, 1.4T/8AT with ~12k miles
Lease runs out in 60 days, but it needs an oil change now says the owner
Do I have a replacement one time use drain plug?
No.
Is it getting VW 508 oil?
No.
1000012934.webp

For under $20 in materials, it'll do 🤔
1000012935.webp

My final patient 👨‍🔧
2017 Optima, 2.4 Theta II, 103K (yes it heavily burns oil)
While having the hood up for it's weekly top off, I noticed the serpentine belt was coming apart 😲
1000012945.webp

This belt uses a normal spring tensioner and drives the A/C and alternator
The inner stretch belt drives the water pump alone
I've never changed a stretch belt before, and wow do I never want to do it again
The catalog was unclear, so it turned out both the Rib Ace belts were what I needed
1000012946.webp

The serpentine popped off with a leveraged 17mm, and I cut the WP belt off
I'm not used to serpentine belts failing like this at the 100k mark ❓
Both were the factory originals
1000012949.webp

1000012948.webp

I then proceeded to spend the next 1.5 hours being profound with my profanity 🤬 trying to get that stretch belt on
I did it, from up top, without removing the wheel
No, I'm not ever doing it again 🙄
1000012947.webp

All done, nice and quiet 🤫
Gotta clean the belt debris from everywhere 🤷‍♂️
1000012950.webp

Now, onto keys
He only had one for this car, so I used it as a guinea pig for the Autel iKeys that came with my KM100
It worked, but I'm a stickler for detail, so $30 was allocated for an OEM style smart key
The goal was to make a complete second key (emergency key) included

I think it turned out pretty well, missing the Kia logo of course but who really cares 🙄
1000012951.webp

Finding someone locally to cut laser keys was a chore, especially someone that would cut something I supply, and for a fair price
I wound up at a rather unexpected place, Ace Hardware 🤔
Walked in, store manager was the only one that could work the rebranded Xhorse machine
They didn't flinch at my simple ask, unlike the other half dozen places I called/stopped into
At 11am on a Sunday no less 🤌

It's like a little baby Bridgeport 😯
1000012909.webp

1000012895.webp

$5.44 later, I was out the door with my laser key copied 👍
And it actually worked, which is better than I can say for some locksmiths I've paid good money to 🙄
1000012910.webp

Programmed the iKey out, reprogrammed the other two keys, topped off the perpetually oil burning Theta II and sent him down the road 🛣️

Replaced a couple O-rings, one for camshaft position sensor, one for VVT solenoid. The solenoid still leaks in its center....maybe too long OCIs or dino oil or both caused it.

A walker for my dad. They hit a roadblock with mangled threads. I was going to do a thread insert but could NOT get my STI tap to start no matter what.

So I drilled out the rivet pin and disassembled
20240729_094214.webp

It's just a hex nut pressed into the plastic from the backside
20240729_094225.webp

I pressed in a new nut (M6x1.0) on my arbor press and installed two 3/16" rivets

Fixed (bottom of photo)

This has me wondering if our 2020 Forte is included in the coil issue too. I've not had the engine cover off yet, though I changed the oil in the IVT at 43K.
Found the passenger's side low beam is easier too!

Thank @OilMagnate for putting me onto this knowledge
https://bobistheoilguy.com/forums/t...ine-owners-check-your-ignition-system.338661/

My experience now is that even if your year isn't involved, check the physical attributes of the coils in your engine if you're having issues
