What are you working on today?

I’ve been in Walcott Iowa since Tuesday morning and will be here until sometime Sunday most likely. I’m here with one of my trucks for the Truckers Jamboree. I left home Monday night around 9pm after working a half day and drove all night up here. I rolled in around 5am Tuesday. It’s been a really good time so far. First pic is mine and the rest are a few of my favorites.

Installed a pair of salvage yard seat belt assemblies in a 2010 Subaru. The original set were triggered by a deer hit and the used pair was $70. I guessed at the color while at the parts desk since I was adding these on (I was picking up a trunk deck lid and a hood for my Charger and my Jeep). I guessed correctly .

Bolted them up and it all works fine now. Just need to install the hood I picked up for it to replace the curved hood - it’s bent enough to create noticeable gaps.

Then I ordered a set of pads and rotors for my mom’s 2015 Mini Cooper. It’s grinding back there and she thought it was rust. But it is grinding all the time now and I suspect they need a replacement. There wasn’t a dashboard warning, which is odd as these will usually warn you when the pads are worn out. I also included a brake pad wear sensor. Right at $100 with shipping from RockAuto.

I was curious to see how the ultrasonic sensors were attached to the bumper; the rear being the easiest to gain a visual.

While under there, I noticed this.

The Highlander has an odd suspension knock; front/back/left/right. Didn't show itself during the test drive but appeared during periods of rain and when I'd run the vehicle thru the car wash with an undercarriage rinse. Once dry, the noise would disappear. The past few months, it would do it all the time, then just disappear and randomly reappear.

Because of the heat, I just cranked the tire up; I'll have to drive it a while to see if the noises are gone. I figured the cause was something stupid like this.

I wasn't to concerned other than annoyed. I was going to have the dealership take a look when I bring it in for the bumper recall.

So much for Toyota Certified Pre-Owned, 160-Point Inspection.

Road test revealed the loose spare was NOT the root cause. Now it gets a little harder.

Paulo, I have a 2018 F150. Ever since I bought it, it feels like the spare is loose upon anything more than gentle acceleration. I roll in to the pedal and feel like something about 40 pounds shifts back and gently thuds.

It’s not the spare that I can tell on mine. It’s tight.

And I’ve not figured it out either. Since new.

Hardcore tech: exhaust repair on a '14 Chrysler-of-Japan Versa with 85k.

The problem:

One flange stud snapped so I drilled it out with a highly improvised setup (worked great):

I knew just butting it back together and welding would likely fail again soon. In the spirit of run-what-ya-got-lying-around I cut some scrap exhaust pipe and bootied some gussets:

The super high quality heat shield had torn through its anchors. I often save hole saw drops for mega fender washers:

Done. Not saying it's top quality work, but it's functional:

800lbs and went to a new place and they seemed pay more! Same distance from the house so it’ll be our new yard.

Good to hear. There’s place maybe 10 miles from brothers. They love his LS engine carnage and old gear sets and gears. They take burned out/crushed filters too so that’s a HUGE bonus.

Tire gauge calibration antics. Left my Milton S-506 analog gauge at work wanted to see if they all match up.

Slime off by 1psi. Just threw new button cells in it too, no way to calibrate it.

Got my butt kicked by a rattle in an '07 CRV. My fault as I didn't even think to see if it was tied to brakes sooner than I did.

Turned out to be the notorious dry caliper pins. They weren't dry, but there wasn't much grease in there. The little rubber inserts on the upper pins looked good visually, but I'll tell the owner if it returns we'll need to replace those.
