What are you working on today?

Man, it's December!

I know what you mean.........about feeling good digging outside AND the glasses!!
I'm wandering around through the underbrush looking for weeds to dig up. Got some terrible thorny greenbrier and gooseberries. And the annual purge of mulberry, honeysuckle and burning bush that pop up all over. This is what I'm normally doing in March or April. Got some sod to cut out and move for lawn leveling too.

Today:
New front motor mount and torque strut on a 2014 Buick Enclave. Smoothed out the lurch and shifting. Bought parts at the local buick dealer due to time constraints ~$220.

Also did a tire rotation

Yesterday:
New Control Arm Bushings and Balljoints on a 2015 Subaru Forester. Replaced all with Dorman from RockAuto.

Also replaced engine air filter, cabin air filter, and rotated the tires.

Took a bunch of tools to the neighbors house, and then built a wheelchair ramp for her daughter, who will be moving in, and obviously is in a wheelchair.
She asked me to help her build it last week, so we made a plan, and I gave her a shopping list of things to get.

2003-ish JD GX345 with a 20hp FD611V Kawasaki liquid-cooled twin. Came in as a non-runner, the customer had "replaced a few things"...

Long story short, he'd been messing with the "time delay" module and had 2 of the wires crossed, killing spark from the coils. Put the wires back the way they belonged and the thing ran beautifully. That little '611V is one smooth twin.

Sister’s 2019 Focus Active

Rear brake job - pads and rotors.

LH inner pad was down to the backing plate. Whoops.

All fixed now

Finished up the install on my wood burning insert. Had to cut out the damper/part of the frame and chip away some brick for proper clearance to fit the liner. Patched up some issues in the heart and sides before I stuck it in there. Fabricated block off plate out of 26ga galvanized sheet metal and insulated above it with fire proof insulation. Installed a 6” insulated and shelled fireflies HD 316SS liner. Lifetime warranty on the liner. Stove is a Drolet 1800i. Rated at 75000 BTU/2100 sq ft.

Planted 6 trees/bushes, which of course meant I dug 9 holes, filled 3, and found (by cutting) and repaired a sprinkler line. mowed the winter weeds and grass in splotches in the lawn, and then ran the mower and generator for a while (generator hasn’t been used in several months).

I’m totally in favor for saving shovel work for this time of year when the ground is wet and the air is cool.

About a dozen years ago I had some clients with an insert. They didn't like the HUGE sheetmetal surround (I've never quite understood why they need to be as large as they are?)

They wanted me to build something "less." Since my "creative" side -- such as it is -- tends toward an industrial feel, I suggested stainless SHCSs in a counterbore. The screws do absolutely nothing functional, they just sit in pipe I tapped. I used steel channel.

I actually took the stock surround and mapped out the slots which slide down on screws, then machined those into the channel, thus it anchors exactly as stock:

Looks great! I had to go this large to cover my fire place opening, it only covers the ends by an inch or 2. I am going to do some experimenting with heat output with and without the trim plates for the heck of it. And debate on what “look” I like better.

Smoked over an '08 Mountaineer 4.6 w coolant leak. The plastic Y on passenger side heater hose melted on exhaust manifold. Apparently not uncommon. Has aux rear heater.

I broke my own rule (just don't use Dorman, ever) and ordered a Dorman on RA, then read some reviews on Amazon for the 626-551. Apparently one of the connections may be 3/4" when it should be 5/8". Most of those reviews seem to be 2019 and 2020, so maybe the part has been revised -- hope springs eternal.

I should have trusted my gut (famous last words) and sent the VIN to @bdcardinal -- too late now and I have no one to blame but myself if the Dorman part sucks balls (and they usually do)
