What are you working on today?

Back at my friend's shop today

1966 Ford F100 351 Cleveland V8
Changed oil

2004 Ford Taurus
Pan drop and filter change on the transmission, replaced front brake pads and rotors, changed engine oil

Smoked over an '08 Mountaineer 4.6 w coolant leak. The plastic Y on passenger side heater hose melted on exhaust manifold. Apparently not uncommon. Has aux rear heater.

I broke my own rule (just don't use Dorman, ever) and ordered a Dorman on RA, then read some reviews on Amazon for the 626-551. Apparently one of the connections may be 3/4" when it should be 5/8". Most of those reviews seem to be 2019 and 2020, so maybe the part has been revised -- hope springs eternal.

I should have trusted my gut (famous last words) and sent the VIN to @bdcardinal -- too late now and I have no one to blame but myself if the Dorman part sucks balls (and they usually do)
Is it this monstrosity? Or doe sit only have front A/C? My partner on back counter has been off all week on vacation with her daughter (super happy they get time together) and I have been busier than a 1 legged man in a butt kicking competition.

Now you've got me second guessing but this is the Dorman option and it sure looks like what I need. The "Y" is getting melted from the exhaust manifold.

I think this just constitutes one part of what you show. Also, i got it on a wholesaler closeout at ~$60

Well best case it works. Worst case, well... If you want to still shoot me the VIN feel free.

These words: head gasket replacement.

On: the 2007 Mini Cooper S R56 on the N14 engine.

I went through it after the dealer tech analyzed and diagnosed it. He left off a connector to the VVT solenoid and removed a vent valve on the crankcase ventilation built in to the valve cover.

I have on order the gaskets, fasteners, head bolts, new valve cover (the vent valve is not available separately), and possibly a replacement head, likely used. Remans are stratosphere pricing.

It’s going to be a long, expensive project. But I’ll do it. Dealer wanted $3000 to $4000. Not worth it.

I added some AC Pro refrigerant in my Xterra today. The AC Compressor itself is leaking, but I’ve been monitoring it. Only recently did it start blowing luke warm air though. I’m in FL, so A/C is nice to have. 😅 if it buys me a few months I’m okay with that. Didn’t have to use the whole can.

Neighbor was admiring my new brake flush machine and wanted his vehicle done.

So I did it for him.

During the service I noticed some gear oil residue near the passenger rear backing plate.

Since I was feeling opportunistic, I removed the tire and drum to confirm that he needed to replace his rear axle bearings and seals. 😁

Huh. I know they are more sensitive but I have never heard of it being an issue in a modern vehicle. Does it have different charging or voltage regulation needs or something?
Yes. Every decent battery charger I have used has a special mode for AGM’s. On vehicles where some models have AGM, there is a coding procedure required to establish battery type and size.

Is the difference significant? That’s debatable.

Retailers love to sell expensive AGM batteries, presumably for the profit margin. But generally speaking, their only real advantage is the lack of leakage issues.

Well if it craps out sooner then I guess that will learn me. Thanks for the heads up.

Acquired a 2009 GMC Yukon recently, AFM 5.3L had a collapsed lifter that I temporarily repaired by unlocking the lifter & turning the AFM off.
Unfortunately....It has low oil pressure & uses quite a bit of oil. I was pretty much prepared to put a engine in it anyway.

It was priced right & I like driving it, So I decided to build up a 6.0L for it. Just got the Block, Heads, Crank, Rods & Pistons back from the machine shop.

It's a 2013 L96 iron block punched .040" over, 4.0395" to be exact.
Seamless Durabond Cam Bearings, Had to use a .002" undersize in the front journal.
Flat-top LS2 hypereutectic pistons
L96 Crank, Standard/Polished
L96 Rods
Mahle/Clevite 77 Main & Rod Bearings
Mahle file to fit Moly Rings
Rotating assembly balanced, My Machinist is one of the best I've seen/Doesn't cut corners!
799 Cathedral Port heads, Surfaced, Valve job, .560" lift BTR Valve Springs.
BTR Stage 1 V2 truck Cam, 206/212 .553/.553 112+0
Chevrolet Performance 88958689 Bowtie Lifters
BTR/GM Lifter Trays
BTR V2 Trunnion upgrade
Standard Volume/Pressure GM oil pump
GM 4X 3-bolt Cam Gear
BTR Crank Gear
GM LS2 Timing Chain
GM LS2 Timing Chain Damper
GM LS2/LS3 Timing Cover
GM Head Gaskets
GM Head Bolts

I'll get everything cleaned tomorrow & hopefully get the short block assembled. Should be a solid 400HP engine with good low end torque as it's basically a Iron Block LS2 with a touch more valve lift.

Do you have the press attachment?

I did some mumbling about that here
