What are you working on today?

It’s the busiest we’ve been in a long time. I think if things didn’t get so clustered up it would be better. It gets to the point where you are waiting to pull into your bay because there are cars everywhere waiting on approval and just complete madness can barely fit through the shop. I just don’t like how hectic it is. I’m ok with being busy just those are the reasons I don’t. I’m ready for Memorial Day so they will let us use the AC.
In my work we don’t deal with customers so that’s always nice. My work is always busy and has been since I started there 17 years ago 🙊🙊

@CleanSump that is a great question, one which I do not know the answer. From my reading, no inline fuses have been mentioned but thats not to say there isn't one.

So ac worked in 2021 just fine. Last year we really did not drive it, other than using it for odds and ends on the farm. So its not like it slowly lost juice, from what I see, it just quit. To me thats a fuse, broken wire or similar.

Found some OEM alloys for my '11 F350 and decided to get rid of the steelies. All four wheels were $185 so not terrible. I'm not sure these alloys were '11-16 OEM or more '05-10 but I personally like the simple mag wheel style.

Wheel style preference is as personal as our taste in women so I understand not everyone will like it but I love the look.

Before and after

Brought one of the fleet trucks home today for an oil change and front brake job. Replaced the pads and rotors. One wheel was so rust-welded on the rotor I had to use a torch to heat it up. Made a nice, loud pop when it finally broke loose. The highlight though, was my 6 year old son running upstairs, getting his coveralls on, and coming out to help me. If it moves, he loves working on it. Cars, mowers, robots, toys, anything, he loves it!

All because the fan was loose because the mounting point rusted out
It really needs a radiator, but I can't get the core support apart because the grille screws are rusted in 😭

T-Stat and radiator take-two on the 02 Chevy Silverado. Ordered all ACDelco parts to replace the defective t-stat and radiator. Autozone radiator drain valve plug broke off in the radiator after cranking it too tight.

ACDelco t-stat and gasket installed before tackling radiator.

ACDelco radiator ordered from Amazon (of course no dealer on this island has one). ACDelco symbol of the day is the Trumpet.

Checking for any shipping damage. Crossing my fingers that USPS didn't booger this up. They are probably mad from the time I ordered a commercial truck quarter fender.

Radiator installed. Did not take any in-between pics since after doing this two-three times it's like speed-running a video game level.
Had to observe order of operations not to deviate from the order of removal. This C1500 has additional cooling upgrades that differ from stock so had to be careful when putting everything back. The addition of electric fans and engine oil cooler lines means the fans bolt on before the oil cooler lines. Then the upper radiator hose goes on last.

Bleeding the cooling system. After bringing engine up to temp, verifying fan operation and watching temperature change system is all good.

Gosh I want to wring the counter workers when I asked for a case of Prestone Dexcool 50/50.

Worker: Not sure if we have a case of Prestone Dexcool 50/50. proceeds to bring out parts catalog dictionary.
Me: Can I pickup 6 bottles of Prestone Dexcool 50/50? Can you also put in a box too?
Worker: Comes out with six individual bottles and puts it in an empty Prestone box.
Me: proceeds to keep my cool

Badge of Authenticity with parts number and production date. 34" radiator with EOC and TOC. A far cry from the original 28" radiator.

Not today, but yesterday was the tire rotation and changed the trans fluid in the CX5 @ 62k miles. Next change will be at 100k with the filter. Got the fluid to do the diffs too (at $35/bottle for OEM!!!) but couldn't find a local place selling 23mm wrenches. CX5 looks hilariously tiny when up on jack stands and no wheels on, like you can grab it and hug it like a puppy.

Tis the season for the cowl vacuum and cabin filter replacement
At ~$6, I'm very satisfied with these PRO-TEC/Wix cabin air filters, they fit real well and have decent media
Vacuuming the tree detritus and washing all the pollen out of the cowl, plus a fresh CAF and maybe rinsing the condenser makes that little difference between good A/C and great A/C IMO

Subaru battery went dead, yet again.

This time in under 2 days. Was driven Saturday and wouldn't even think about cranking over at 12:30pm. Had to get out the old Sears "dumb" charger as my smart charger couldn't sense voltage. Pretty sure it's the DCM causing the draw. Will pull the fuse this week before going to the Subaru dealer next Monday to see if it dies.

Did manage to get a little plumbing done. Supposed to be getting a new fridge Thursday, but they will not hook the ice maker to the old copper line coming out of the floor. Pretty simple with PEX tubing!

I did clean the floor and baseboard after this picture. Floor covering needs replaced when money permits.

Also added another valve in the basement for ease of turn off in a leak event. Pretty sure it will be easier to run down to the basement instead of trying to wiggle the fridge out. Especially if it happens when I'm at work and the only person here is my elderly handicapped mother...

Worked on mounting these over the last couple days. Of course had a bounce at a certain speed.. figures. Went ahead and let all the air out of both and broke the beads and let it reseat.. did rotate the rear 180. Besides the bounce though wow does these ride and handle amazing!

Finishing up the engine job on the '65 Mustang.....Straightening out all the previous hack repairs along the way, Customer also wanted the transmission sealed up, So I just pulled the unit (C4) out & replaced every gasket & seal along with a new Pump Bushing. Everything is sealed except the Modulator Valve is leaking at the crimp.....Which is a new one to me, I'll smoke test the valve tomorrow to verify.

It had the wrong Water Pump installed which caused the Power Steering Pump Bracket to get bent, Straightened it out best I could....Everything now tracks straight & is aligned. I wasn't about to hold the 50 pound Compressor while trying to get a bolt started back behind the PS Bracket, So I installed a couple studs in the cylinder head.....Made things a lot easier!

Headers......I HATE Headers, Especially Small Block Ford, Though Small Block Chevy can be bad to with larger primaries. It had both header gaskets blown & the customer did mention replacing them far to often. These are Hedmen Hedders & decent quality. Used ARP Bolts, Hedmen composite gaskets, with Red Loctite applied, Ran them down semi snug, Took my big flat blade screwdriver & drove it between the bolt & primary on the bolts that I couldn't Socket or the Box end of a Wrench on. 4 bolts total. Then apply torque to the bolts 'til roughly 35 ft ibs.....Compress the gasket good & even. People/Manufacturers think the bolts backing out is the problem.....The only back out because they didn't get tight using the open end of a 3/8" Wrench. That's my procedure for Headers if it helps anyone.

That random "Tink" you hear in the video is the fan hitting the fan shroud, I'll tweak it in the morning, Set Timing to 36 degrees total which gave me 12 degress initial....Love pre-emissions Distributors!

One of the ignition wires came apart, I had an extra (yellow one) so I could fire the engine, Got a new set coming.

Haven't test driven it yet.....But sure run's good & snap throttles are crisp!

Working on these old cars can be challenging, But when a customer doesn't mind paying the actual hours it takes to straighten out a hack job.....I don't mind doing the work.
