What are you working on today?

Rebuilding a 1958 Detroit 2-53.:)

I finished the brakes on the Captiva this morning. Then I replaced a driver's side axle on a 2000 Chevrolet Monte Carlo and changed the oil. After that I replaced spark plugs and coil boots on a 2005 Ford F-150.

Finished up the engine job. Had a bad fuel injector on start up stuck wide open…runs well now.

This morning I went into town to drop off one of my floorjacks at the local hydraulic shop to be rebuilt. Then I rode over to the next town to help a family friend replace cab mount bushings on his 2012 Ford Super Duty....which isn't going well. Three of the eight bolts are stuck solid, halfway out, and one of the cage nuts broke and had to be held in place with an opposing breaker bar, extension and socket. Mind you this truck only has 67k miles on it, and the cab mounts are destroyed. I guess Ford makes them out of American cheese or something. He's replacing them with polyurethane mounts. We *might* get one side replaced tomorrow.

We we're able to get the entire job done today. It wouldn't be so bad if the bolts would cooperate.

Today I just was mainly training the new guy. Boss said let him shadow me and show him everything he should know. He has never changed oil before but has changed a valve cover gasket, battery and I think he said PCV valve or something. He switched fields from machinist to automotive. He seems like a natural mechanic type. He learned how to diagnose misfires, change spark plugs and do tires and just other small stuff and brakes. Still learning the tire machine but that’s totally understandable it took me over a year to fully learn it lol 😂. Only mistake he made was he got my largest hammer out and started wailing on a rotor we were reusing on the braking surface not the hat. My fault for that for letting him get that big hammer out but he didn’t damage it luckily. He doesn’t have tools yet he was hired as an apprentice but I’m a nice person and don’t mind sharing as long as I get them back in my hand to put them back in the correct spot. And funny thing too my first and middle name is Blake Aaron and his first and middle is my name just switched around. Everyone in the shop thought it was the grandest thing. So now we have Balakay A-A- Ron and A-A- Ron Balakay lol 😂. He hasn’t ever seen Key and Peele so we had to show him for him to get the references lol.

Aaron is lucky to have a good teacher and mentor. Perhaps let him know the job is not done until the tools are cleaned and put away properly.
All good Blake! And impressive...

My friend came over with his 2007 TSX; last year we put a new aftermarket front bumper. His friend had hit a parking lit curb and dislodged it. I kinda popped it back in, and partially secured it. Next week he will bring it over; I will lift it up, reinstall it as properly as I can and put 100 tie straps on.

I hear tell they are nearly as good as bailing wire.

Picked up my rebuilt floorjack from the hydraulic shop this morning. Got back home and greased the bearing buddies on my scrap trailer. Then I did some cleaning around the house.

Got a mile from my house down a snow piled road and rhe fuel line popped again on the Trailblazer. Towed it home in reverse and left it where she stands. Need to clear the yard and get it up on stands to assess. Once its warm enough to not need gloves, I will partially drop the tank to access the fuel line junction better.

Sometime this weekend I have to tackle a partial Symmons Temptrol 76 rebuild in the Tub/shower. It's got a slight drip periodically that aggravates the wife. The hard part is getting the knob off. Last time I did this in the downstairs shower, I had to saw off the knob.

Going to fix my neighbors mailbox that my dog knocked over. The post was rotted and she bumped into it and it fell over. Then I have to get the tires rotated on my Escape. I brought home my Milwaukee impact to do it since I don’t feel like dragging out the air. The reason I have to get them rotated is because it loves to wear out the front tires so the fronts are at 7/32 and the rears at 11/32 with about 11,000 on the tires. Might change the front brake pads and rotors while I’m at it the pads are at 4mm and the rotors are warped and have been for awhile and pulsate like mad when you stop. Haven’t checked the rear drums since I’ve owned the car. I imagine they still have plenty of life they are the originals with 189,000 on them. That’s one good thing about drum brakes is they last forever. However I have seen the shoes crack and come apart before and that’s not a good day for anyone which is why it’s good to check them with age.

Call me lucky but I’ve never saw cracked brake drum shoes. Not saying it doesn’t happen though.
