What are you working on today?

Well, I guided my eldest through changing the tires on the SRT today. He put on the snows, didn't mark any of the (insanely heavy) rims, torqued everything to spec and then I sprayed the lugs with AMSOIL Metal Protectant. He'll be re-torquing them after 150km.

Interestingly, the two tires on the driver's side were at 35psi (supposed to be 37 cold, so I bumped to 40, since it's 12 degrees out) but the two on the passenger side were looooooww. The one with the plug in it was at 15 and the one without a plug was at 20. Will have to keep an eye on those, may have to get them checked. I was originally too cheap to get TPMS sensors in them but I'm rethinking that now and may get them installed.

Fluid filmed the caravan today and the civic yesterday. I've been living in this house since 2002. The builder ran cat 5e cables but I never fed the signal to the other rooms. Finally been doing that this week. Main router is upstairs in a bedroom that is used as an office. I also installed the TP link deco last year after I cut the cable. I wanted to hard wire the Decos to the Ethernet.

Here is the hub I installed on the breaker panel.

Is a bit of a hassle making adjustments to air pressure from mid fall to mid / late spring . Possible leaking tire nuisance as well . Just had tire patched with plug and patch . Seems fine for past month . Hopefully , they were telling the truth about the patch .

Yeah, that's why I'm thinking may just get the TPMS sensors installed, then at least I'll know when/if one is getting low rather than having to keep an eye on them and checking them when we have a foot of snow.

Been there . One tire decided to leak during the colder part of winter at the start of Covid-19 and couldn't get it in until a few weeks later . Many places were closed or backed up due to lack of techs . Had to check 3 times a day and top off before calling it a night . Luckily , it was a slow leak. Have a OASSER hand held air inflator .

Yesterday I helped my son change the car battery on his 2020 Subaru Impreza Premium. The original 530 cold cranking amps lead acid battery was not starting car reliably, he was having to jump start it and even after charging overnight on the Noco Genius 5 charger it would not charge. The original battery measured just 305 CCA and the electronic battery tester said 55% (replace) after we swapped it out. He had to jump start the car 3 times in the past few weeks, and it is not even cold out yet.

We put in a brand new Duracell Platinum AGM battery from Sam's Club that I bought on 10/30/2021 but the warranty sticker on the battery is 11/21. That means the warranty is good until to the end of November 2024. The replacement battery is rated 640 CCA but tested at an actual 773 CCA (tested before I put the new battery on the Noco Genius 5 charger overnight, to top it off to peak capacity before installing it).

The battery comes with a plaster spacer on top of the terminals and a good thing I kept it because to get the new battery to fit, I needed to put it on the battery box and put the new battery atop it. Otherwise the battery strap would not fit. With the spacer underneath the Duracell AGM is a perfect fit. My son commutes 140 miles each day to work and back and that OEM Subaru battery was on its last legs, and he gets home after midnight. I am glad we replaced it.

Pulled the Muncie from the GTO this morning. It was getting tough to slip into first gear when warmed up. Going to install my spare M20 and look for some quality synchros since these aftermarket ones didn't last but a few thousand miles. Took an hour and fifteen and everything aches now. Good news is I didn't get even one injury. This old man needs to get that lift he's been talking about for a few years.

Oops . It was a slow leaking valve stem due to corrosion , not a tire leak .

Had to replace the cruise control switch in the '17 Mustang after the power button called it a day. Not sure hot it got broken, as I never found the missing tab from inside the button. Sweating bullets handling that air bag, even though the battery was disconnected. Felt akin to handling a grenade.

This week the car is the 91 Mazda 626 hatchback. On Saturday late afternoon I was about four miles from home on the freeway and when shifting the pedal went to the floor and wouldn't return. I just knew I'd get stuck when I got off the freeway as the one exit lane opens up to three lanes on a somewhat blind right curve with light at the bottom. Yep, got the red, dropped the car out of gear, and was unable to shift back in now with the car blocking a lane of fairly high speed cars coming around the bend. What was amazing is how many stupid people pulled right up behind me, despite my flashers being obvious, and then when the light turns green hit their horn. Called AAA, they asked if in a safe place, and I said not on your life. So the tow truck shows up 45 minutes later, has to block a lane of cross traffic and I get towed home the last two miles. Then the much younger driver hung around 45 minutes when he saw all the classic cars under covers and we talked classic cars that he knows through his uncles.

Anyway I had already figured out I was out of fluid when I hopped out of the car at the light. Back home added fluid and had my son inside so I could bleed. Then in the process of doing that I saw the slave leak from the other side. Ok, a new slave cylinder. Just installed and the clutch still goes to the bottom and doesn't engage. Hmm, clutch master? Pedal also has a lot of free play so I get under the dash to take a look see. Well, it is oily damp around the clutch master AND the brake master. So those two are on order from my favorite supplier on eBay to be installed. After that the car gets an all new rear suspension replacement using Mazda parts except the struts.
