Well it's that after I run it long enough...
I use ST 5W30 in my Champion invertor, something like that in my push mower (which to be honest gets like 5 hours per season so it's been a few years since I changed it), and my ATV gets Rotella 5W40, T6 I think. None of them get run all that long per year, so they go a couple years between changes. I should change the oil in my riding mower as it gets the most use, although the ATV is probably most important (it pushes snow in the winter).
I should change more often, as they seem to see a fair amount of gasoline loading (blowby?) (just smells gassy when I change it). Quality is probably less important than freshness. None of them are fuel injected.
