What are friction modifiers?

I was curious about "friction modifiers". I think they are added to engine oil and other auto lubricants, like ATF,differential fluids, power steering fluids, etc. I know that some products themselves, are "friction modifiers". So what are "friction modifiers" and what do they do? Thanks in advance!
