As I've said a few times, when I first got my Jag the Jag forums recommended 20W50. Since reading and posting on here I've discovered that I don't really necessarily need that thick an oil. So, just out of curiosity, what would take a ??W50 oil these days?

An old car, truck OR piece of OPE burning a LOT of oil or knocking badly;

Motorcycles;

A loosely-built race engine that will be subjected to extreme use.

High performance cars that can run high oil temps when driven as intended (i.e. not bumbling around at the speed limit).

I know the Lexus LFA and McLaren Mercedes SLR spec Mobil 1 5w-50, and several hot Mustangs and the Ford GT have specced 5w-50s as well.

Yes the Ford GT and Cobra I think but the spec' GP III Motorcraft 5W-50 shears about 25% the second you fire it up.
A quality GP IV oil like M1 0W-40 probabily would deliver the required operational viscosity without all the initial shearing.

Mobil 1 also has a 15w-50 on the market, still in high demand, supposedily available by this summer in 5 quart jugs.

I guess the drag racers and Motorcycle entusiasts use this oil.

Since, all Mobil 1 oils are compatable with each another, this oil should pose no problem with mixing and blending. This heavy full synthetic oil, can be mixed with other Mobil 1 oils, synthetic or dino oils.

Yeah, I have an orphan quart of that stuff I bought based on those 20W50 recommendations. Anybody want it

I've got 3 quarts of 20w50 left over from when I used that grade in the Rx7. I'm not sure what to do with it now.

All volvo penta gas i/o and inboards, and probably other marine brands too. But not 5w50, rather 15w50 or 20w50

Got a 4-stroke lawn mower?
I've been using the 20 year old dino 20W-50 I still have in my stash in mine. It will still be a couple of years before it's gone.

Or you could buy nine quarts of Toyota 0W-20 to blend it with.
The result would be a a high VI 5w30.

My new Hitachi air compressor from Lowes takes 5w50 synthetic oil. I was shocked it required that heavy of an oil
