What 0W-16 are you using?

I've been researching for a few months on all the different 0W-16s on the market. I've ran Pennzoil, Valvoline, M1, and Toyota OEM. Very subjective, but the M1 seemed louder than the rest. Toyota OEM is very high in moly according to VOA others have posted. What are you running, why?

Personally, I really don't see the point of sweating over it. 0w-20 is so functionally similar that there is little point of going out of ones way to look for 0w-16.

You are using good oil. What is your experience and which one do you like? Also what kind of car is it that is taking 0W-16 and did the TGMO sound smoother?

As far as the noise, M1 noise is kind of like Bigfoot sightings! You will hear some reports once in a while.

I have a 2019 RAV4 Hybrid with about 40,000 miles. Was going to dealer for TGMO 0W-16 until their price doubled. Using Mobil 1 0W-16 for this oil change. I'm on an annual oil change cycle at about 6,000 miles. Next oil change is ready with 0W-20 Castrol Edge EP gold bottle. Moving to what I believe to be a better viscosity and product for engine longevity. Zero ability to measure that improvement, but in other thoughts why not?

I am still on the factory fill. I will ask when the dealership does the 10,000 mile oil change. I am at about 8,600 miles now and I pulled the dipstick and it looks like brand new oil. I will probably go with Mobil 1 if Walmart has it otherwise a good synthetic oil will do. It's kind of hard to find and I seen a jug of 0W-16 at Walmart but I can't remember what brand it was since I don't need it yet.

I'm running Pennzoil Platinum 0W-20 in my 2.5L gas Rav4. I drained the factory fill of 0W-16 at 500miles and put in 0W-20. Changed again at 5000 miles.
When I go in for the 10K mile checkup later this fall, I might just leave the Toyota Care free oil change 0W-16 in there for the winter.

I've been a Mobil 1 guy for a long time. I switched to Pennzoil because of their rebates. I don't think there is much of a performance difference between any of the major oil brands when changing at 5000 mile intervals.

I like to use this 0w-16 called supertech diesel cause if it can run 0w-16 it can run 15w-40. Though I wouldn't use something with 4+ hths in this car unless it's running for several hours a day every day so I'd just use something thinner like a euro rated 30/40 grade. You could try pennzoil platinum euro L 5w-30 or M1 esp 0w-30.

My owner's manual only shows 0W-16 in the chart. It also is missing the paragraph about 5W-30 and 10W-30.
So, I'm running with 0W-20 so I can stock one oil type in my garage for both of my vehicles. My Honda CR-V is still running great after 14 years and 150K miles on 0W-20, so it should be good enough for my new Toyota to live a long and useful life.

I liked the TGMO, I hardly ever hear much of the engine running it, mostly just CVT drone. It’s a very quiet oil. Plus, my local dealer stocks it and lets you bring a container in for $7 a quart.

I would just be worried about the variable volume oil pump. It was designed for 0w16 to be used, and for 0W20 to be used if absolutely necessary (and only for one oil change interval). I’m suspecting that it detects how much oil is being pumped, adapts to what the engine needs, and sends more. I don’t want the sensors to think oil has been sent in a certain volume when it hasn’t.

Give m1 ESP 0w-20 or Castrol european 0w-20 a try. In an engine like this I don't think I'd bother using a 40 grade but I'd use a 30 grade and maybe a 20 if it doesn't burn any oil with a 20.

I doubt the oil pump is that magical but it certainly sounds high tech.

Have a look at this Australian manual for the 2022 RAV4 Hybrid.
Multiple viscosities are allowed up to 10W-30, 0W-16 is recommended.
It's all a fuel economy play, minuscule as it may be.

List of oils I’ve used between current and previous Toyotas spec’ing 0W16.

Toyota Genuine Motor Oil 0W16
Valvoline Advanced 0W16
Pennzoil Platinum 0W16
Mobil1 AFE 0W16
Pennzoil Platinum 0W20

I cannot tell the difference between any of them to be honest. Maybe one is louder than the other and I just didn’t notice. The question is does it actually matter?

Next up is Castrol Edge 0W20 cause it was on sale awhile back. I just buy whatever is readily available and/or on sale at the time. Some times rebates play into it. But sound never does.
