Went to buy a new Cruze today....

Consider the VW Golf too.
A very nice product that is actually now as reliable as a Honda.
In many ways it is a class leader, and combines comfort with great handling and practicality too. Hatchback looks more sporty than the Jetta sedan.

If you look at the Focus make sure you buy the manual trans as the DCT is clunky. Same for the Fiesta.

The Mazda 3 and the 6 are probably some of the very best in the the compact and midsize category. The price is right too if you don't go for the higher trim levels. Rust problems have been solved for a few years at least now.

Yes. I like the Cruze, but hate shopping for a car. So I guess I'm still looking around. I hear good things about the Mazda 3.

I would not touch a Mazda 3 or any Mazda in fact, if you live in Michigan, or the northern states where road salt is used in winter. Salt pretty much dissolves Mazdas from the bottom up after just a couple of seasons, worse than any other cars! Used to see it in Europe a lot too. Just run a google search 'Mazda 3 rust' or similar, and you'll find 3 year old cars that would make you cringe! This probably wouldn't be a problem if you'll be selling in a couple of years.

I'd be looking at a Jetta or a corolla, civic or focus sedan personally

but there are plenty of choices in this genre

I would definitely look at a lower end Impreza as well, bullet proof 2.0 boxer, 4wd and a lot more room for only pocket change more

Being an MI guy...gotta agree....If I got a 3, it would only be three season car....

Co worker has 2010 3 Hatch....already rust under the doors and hatch door. Granted, she does not wash it like crazy, but still..

Good friends of ours have a 2008 Mazda 5. Love the van, just don't love the fact it has a few rust spots already...

Other than that, love the cars!!

And someone has to stop out from the crowd...I'll still buy one.

Media has made GM paranoid, and roasting them for dinner....

Sucks they are putting a hold on them....Odd thing is, GM dealerships HAVE this part in stock.....

So many other good cars.

Personally I would sign the papers with stipulation GM provides a free rental if you like it enough.

Otherwise walk away so many great cars in this glass now that domestic started importing designs beyond the Asian entries.

Surprised they didn't pretend to have sealed the deal an hour earlier, and "didn't get the fax". Liability be darned, there's a commission on the line!

So ... if you get in a wreck, you will no longer have something exploding in your face and covering you with toxic powder? How is that a bad thing?

I would have offered them more if they could guarantee the airbags wouldn't work.

It's all a bunch of stupidity, IMO. One car has a problem then everyone else tries to use it to get out of their lease they can't afford.

One of the local 'car malls' has a HUGE lot full of recalled customer cars. And a hailstorm was coming last night. I guess they started to pack the customer cars in all of the manufacturers garages.

As a paramedic, and having seen plenty of auto accidents and the aftermath over the last 10 years of doing it....

All I really have to say about this is, you are an idiot. Oh, and make sure not to wear your seatbelt too, those cause really bad bruises in auto accidents too! Don't want that happening either.

What toxic powder would that be? Please be specific.

Just wondering as I do have some experience with them. I worked for a company that did research into different types of pyrotechnic initiators.

I worked with someone severely injured by an airbag. Without it, he'd have driven home. With it, he & his wife ended up in the hospital. My wife got hit by one & lost a tooth.

My mother CANNOT DRIVE my truck...because the airbag would decapitate her! I would happily pay a premium to not get an airbag!

Funny you should say that.

Picked up a new Malibu today, the dealer worked hard to get me a good price on it. I liked the Mazda 3. A lot. But I stuck with GM because I get a fat GM employee discount (thanks Mom!)and the Malibu is a decent car for the price I paid. So I'm happy.

Nice car and nice choice.

If you were going for the same size as the Cruze, I would have recommended the Civic or Focus. The Corolla keeps having old-fogey design issues with me. Same with the Camry. It almost seems like all the exterior design people that once worked for Oldsmobile, now command the designs of Camrys and Corollas.

The whole idea behind airbags is because people ignore safety belts. I'll stick to my safety belt.

Not a bad car at all. My mom had a 2011 before she got her Fit and it got very good gas mileage on the highway and came with a lot of features on the standard LT model that one probably wouldn't expect. Looked nice, too. If getting a new car, I'd still consider a GM since I, too, get the employee discount as she retired from GM.

2014 Malibu LS. Just a base model, but that is perfectly OK with me. The engine has a lot more get up and go than the Cruze ever did. It's rained all week here in Michigan so it's already filthy, lol.

Boy, and I thought that I was seeing things when all of the Mazdas I see here in WI have wheel well rust on what appear to be late model cars. How can they not have rustproofing figured out yet?

I've noticed the same trend with Nissan, too.

Actually, airbags are designed to work in conjunction with seat belts. If you don't wear a seat belt, a deploying airbag can hurt you badly.

Although I think some cars feature smart airbags these days that deploy differently, depending on whether the seat belt is fastened or not.

I saw one late model Mazda 3 in the parking lot with every panel galore with rust; I just could not believe it.

I would MUCH rather be wearing a seat belt with NO air bag, than have an air bag and NOT use a seat belt (as much of this country does, laws or not) in an accident.

No it's not.
