Went against the HOA

You better hope the HOA does not get wind of this concrete pour . It's easy to say " It's my property and I'll do what I want ." until they drag you into Court and produce the document that you signed at closing that says you will abide by all HOA rules . They will get a judgement against you and put a lien on your property . Something as simple as a fence , a sidewalk or even a paint color can cost you big time . I wish you well .

My original house lot is not part of the HOA subdivision so it is not constrained by regulations. I have two HOA lots. One I combined tax wise with the original lot as it was not really fit for building on. There is an access road that boarders almost 300 ft of my property. This is 66 ft wide and a public utility easement too. It has a 20 ft wide gravel road on it.

I maintain it mowing and have also planted a lot of bushes, flowers, trees on the easement, not to interfere with any utilities. For some reason there is great resentment over this. At our first and only meeting 25 years ago I got them to agree that the adjoining property owner has rights of use to the easement properties.

This came to a head this summer with the new neighbor. If they ever have another meeting (4 a year are legally required) the whole thing will dissolve due to their ignoring their duties for the last 25 years. But the officers are their for a lifetime I guess. All are in their 80s.......

The HOA is broke so I don't expect them to do anything improvement wise. hence why I took on the responsibilities I do myself. Only thing done is fill potholes on the gravel road.

Oh good, the weekly HOA rant. To those who say never buy in an HOA, here if you want a new build it's either in an HOA or you buy a lot outside of town and be at the mercy of a contractor AND either roll the dice drilling an expensive well that may be dry or haul water.

Wife worked for the gas company for 17 years, I showed her the photo of the meter and she said that's not to code. The pipe is going to corrode where it's in contact with the cement. Should have been sleeved or boxed. Your gas company could make you correct it.

Seems like its going to be sorta hard to claim it was already there when you submitted it and it was denied.

I hate HOA's and i was VP of one. However, i wouldn't antagonize them...

Anyhow, good luck.

The sides of my house needed some sort of a paved walkway as the grass wasn’t really growing there and during heavy rain it got muddy.

I decided on concrete. When the contractor came in to start the work, my wife asked if I submitted HOA for a permit, which of course I didn’t.

So, I submitted a request that same day. They took their sweet time, asked for drawings, plans, holy smokes I thought they will want a full surveyor report for this simple task. 😡
Meanwhile the work has been done lol.

Anyways, after about a month and a half, they declined it, saying it cannot be permanent. What a joke.

Now, my story is I bought the house this way 🤫🤐

looks great, other than that sharp corner which will break off soon. Looks professional. HOA can be pretty ridiculous sometimes. But I have found it is better to ask for forgiveness than permission sometimes. Hope they dont make you bust it all up.

Permanent huh?

I can honestly say I’ve never seen a gas line ran through concrete like this in a residential setting, but honestly other than that I see zero issues.

On a side note, I don’t get complaining about a HOA when you chose to purchase a home there. I will say we have some friends who lived in a non HOA neighborhood that had a new HOA neighborhood go in behind them while they lived there. It was essentially a wooded area with a nice creek prior to them coming in and dozing everything. The new HOA went after him as well as his neighbors wanting them to start obeying. Definitely a strange thing.. they sold a few years later and moved.
I think a sleeve is required if the line is run under the slab into the interior of a house

I asked my HOA what colors are OK to repaint the house, they sent a note: “any earth color”. I painted yellow. I got a note: “REPAINT YOUR HOUSE”.

I sent them a note: “You didn’t define earth colors, are you telling me yellow isn’t displayed on earth? Sunflowers, yellow waves of grain? …”SUE ME”!

They approved my paint job.

Sold my rent house to be rid of the HOA. Put the proceeds in annuities and get equal monthly income without paying 60% of it out to insurance, property taxes, maint/repair and HOA fees. And my monthly goes up a bit annually for 7 years. Far better long term. And no HOA.

Yes, that’s the risk “the previous owner took”.
It seems like you actually believe that excuse will work. It would be odd for you to request to put in a sidewalk in the same location that the previous owner put a sidewalk in.

I can plead insanity

You just replaced the really terrible and extremely thin one the PO had lain down. I mean, he only used like 3 bags of concrete and at the thickest it was only about 3 mm thick. Terrible work...... Good on you for replacing that shoddy concrete job.
Yes, busted it up with my .45 and hauled the debris with my lifted Super Duty PSD. Oh, and said a prayer 🙏 first …

I read about some HOAs with crazy rules. I live in an HOA stared around 2001 with only 25 homes. Pretty quiet. No facilities like fitness room or pool.

We have basic property type of rules in bylaws. No real issues with people breaking the rules.

I will say that at the end of day almost no HOA wants to be sued. So pushed I would think most HOAs would relent when pushed. Insurance is an issue at many HOAs are worried about their insurance being cancelled.

I’m always surprised that people who hate HOAs live in HOAs then whine about them.

Go figure is all I can say! Know what your buying, after all a house cost a lot of money. I hope you don’t vote in the same careless way 🧐

Gotta love arm chair critics😉
It’s a free country go to a place where your fellow residents think like you, after all an HOA is made up of them and the majority voted for them. The HOA is the majority of the community homeowners.

Yup, HOAs attract crazies with control issues for sure. And they love to pull favors with people they could benefit them in some way or friends.
Basically big politics on a tiny scale.
Except...you don't ever hear about the good ones. The HOA's that bend over backwards to accomodate requests, that charge tiny small fees, and the board members that go above and beyond to help thier neighbors.

No one jumps on social media or message boards and ever mentions those HOA's.

I also do not understand why people who buy homes with a HOA complain about it after. We thoroughly read our HOA before purchasing our home and we agreed to it. Don’t like it, but a home without one.

Lived in a neighborhood without an HOA and now live in one with an HOA (going on 4 years) and I love it. Don’t miss the yards with garbage, broke down RVs in the street, homes not maintained, ect.

To each their own but don’t buy in an HOA then cry about it after, that’s your own fault.
