My well pump stopped working yesterday. I checked for the basics and found power to the control box. Also found the gauge is DOA.

The control box (3 power wires going to the pump) has a capacitor and a overload. Even had directions on how to check the capacitor and overload. For the capacitor it said to use an ohm meter and it should go to zero and then increase slowly. So the capacitor and overload tested OK. But I had an errand to do and would go right by a well pump place. So I put the cover to the control box in my car and drove, stopping at the well pump place. He tested it using an analog ohm meter and said it did not go up enough (towards infinity). He also swapped the two leads for the ohm meter and retested. He said my capacitor was bad and gave me one they had pulled when doing a well pump replacement. I took it home and it worked.

Or some other coincidence. Maybe the pump ran out of water and things had replenished by the time I got back.

Ideas. My Dad would know the exact answer to this.

Black plastic. From my testing (according to the directions on the label) I thought the capacitor was OK. The guy at the well pump place did more extensive testing. But that is his business.
