Awhile back I had hit my OCI,and Walmart was out of my usual Mobil 1 15W50 silver cap,so I (gulp) tried RP 15W40. Well, after a couple hundred miles on the stuff guess what? Valvetrain noise and smoky cold startups. The stuff started out sooooooooo smooth and quiet, then the inevitable kicked in. What`s the deal with RP products???????

Well,I headed into Walmart after work tonight, grabbed a jug of silver cap Mobil 1 15W50,then headed to Autozone (I got a giftcard for secret Santa at work) and bought an Mobil 1 oil filter and 2 quarts of Mobil 1 75W90 GL5 for the rear differential (RP is in there as I type and it also is getting drained in the morning).

Well,time for some cold cervezas!

Well,I tried it a long time ago and I got the exact same results.........smoky startups and valvetrain noise after a few hundred miles. A guy on a Subaru forum had the exact same experiences. Weird, huh!

Next time if my M1 is out of stock,I`ll use Valvoline conventional. It`s always been my conventional oil of choice.

Its possible your rings/valve guides are so shot that only a 50 wt. oil can hide the symptoms. Noone needs a 50 weight oil. You should be able to use a 30 wt.

Funny this is,that with all the many different oils I`ve tried,RP was the only oil that did that. The Mobil 1 5W30 I used one time made my engine run like a dream (but the Z32 FSM warns against using a 5W30 weight oil),so I went back with a heavier oil.

VG30DE engines pound the heck out of motor oils for some reason. Z32`s are a strange breed of car. Most VGDETT (twin turbo) owners run 20W50 year round. Alot of Ams and Pennzoil 20W50 users on TT.NET getting over 300k miles all on original turbos.

Next time try Rotella 5W40?
I'm surprised that the RP 15W40 seems like it sheared down but the Mobil 1 5W30 didn't.

There's nothing wrong with Royal Purple products. 1995-96 Zs(particularly the turbo models) were plagued with lash adjuster noise as well as premature valve seat recession problems. Both would cause rough, noisey startup. The heavy 50wt oil you have been using is helping cover up valvetrain wear.
Not exactly sure how draining good gear oil out is going to help with the valvetrain noise???

Was wondering that myself about the RP gear oil getting drained out. Nothing wrong with that gear oil either.

Well, the Mobil 1 15w50 seems to be the flavor that works best for his application, masking issues or not. With that, drink-up!

It is sometimes hard to refrain from generalizing, but it's just another part of the thinking process.

Take care and happy holidays.

Well,I was soooooooooo disappointed by the motor oil. A Z owner I met here in town also had the same problem with their oil. Ran smooth as glass for a few hundred miles, then the same symptoms as me. He drained and installed with M1........problems gone.

Guess that`s made me paranoid about the gear oil now, especially after reading the Amsoil White Paper. And heck, the M1 gear oil was free (used my secret Santa gift card I got from work on it).

Sounds like the issue I'm currently having with the high mileage oil switch. I'm gonna run through another tank of gas to see if the smoking on startup goes away before draining and refilling.

I just drained the RP (idled and got the oil good and hot before the drain) and it drained out as thin as hot tap water, and even felt like hot water between my fingers. Cranked her up......all valvetrain noise GONE. Purring like a kitten.

Drained the rear diffy and the RP was full of grit (the OEM fill had previously been drained at 57k miles and looked brand new).

Anyway,hopefully she`s back to the norm :^)

Well, you definitely presented plenty of scientific evidence to prove Royal Purple was the problem(especially the gear oil: that stuff will make the engine rattle on startup everytime!)
Based on your posts i'd say you know plenty about lubricants.
Sooooooooo,sue me...

Yup, you've clearly shown that Royal Purple was the "dooms-day" of your engine and rear-end,give me a break

I know I`m not an petroleum engineer or anything, but getting startup noise and having all the grit draining out of the differential and on the magnetic plug makes me skeptical of $8 and $12 lubricants. Several members here also had bad experiences with those lubes. Luckily I had my flame suit on,heehee!

Anyway,I was just let down seeing how much $$ that stuff costs. If I weren`t to use M1,I`d just be using good ole Valvoline or Pennzoil Conventional.

There's some evidence now from used oil analysis (not totally done in a true scientic, no trending) that the Purp is not the best choice for Nissan VQs. That being said, RP is the best of the niche oils Ive used according to analysis. At least my Evo, Spec V, couple BMWs, couple of Audis (pre direct injection), 2 subs, and 2 GMs. However, Im nearing the end of a run of the 5w30 in my 06 Alti SE-R and noticing the MPG dropping like a rock like the oil is worn out. I will have it analyzed and will also be running a 2nd dose with analysis to get some trend.

I just pulled the RP gear oil from the transmission in the Alti that I put in at 1200 on the clock, puttinng about 27K on it, and at first was shocked at the iron. But, looking at other analysis results on this forum Id say the oil did quite well.

My thoughts, flame away!
