Weird doctors office experience

I’ve been dealing with an ongoing health issue for over a month now, trying to get answers and seeing a myriad of specialist. My latest experience was with a rheumatologist office. I really liked the doctor in the hospital but upon my follow up in the office his senior partner had two of his published books on display in a case in the waiting room for $25 a pop and a sign saying you could get the books autographed by the doctor upon request.

It just left a really bad impression on me. Also he had pictures with various politicians that were autographed and on display as well. I don’t care the political affiliation of the doctor I really don’t but it just seemed tacky. “Hey look at me and who I know.” The final strike was a sign saying you can expect to wait up to 3 hours beyond your appointment time due to the complex nature of treatments etc…is this weird and off putting or am i just irritable?

Needless to say I sought a second opinion.

He's probably proud of it and that's why it's on display, as well as a selling opportunity as long as he isn't charging more than a bookstore or more an autograph.

The pictures with politicians is normal to me, they are in every CEO/partner offices I've been in (along with family/S.O pictures/vacation/exciting moment.)

Sales guy where I used to work was always sending out emails with images of events where he met so and so a celebrity or political figure. Photo of said celebrity, and him, together.

I think you're doing pretty well if these are your worries in life.

For me, doctor visits are 50 people in a waiting room coughing sneezing and people are getting into fist fights and pissing themselves. Some getting brought in on stretchers to said crowded waiting room.

EDIT: Props for the nanny word sensor allowing the word Pissing.

If you want to get a book published, you can go to a vanity publisher. They will publish anything you write if you buy a minimum number of books. I suspect the doctor wrote a book, had it published by a vanity publisher, bought the minimum number of books, and is now trying to sell them to recover his cost of publishing.

My god I guess you are right, I’d walk right out and find another provider if that was my experience.

I’ve had a really great doctor before. The wait times made me find another doctor. It was a stressful enough to make arrangements to leave early 3:00pm for the appointment only to sit in the waiting room until after 6:00pm. I went when I was sick. Worked sick. Felt like my time and circumstances were ignored. Good doctor, yes but when your sick and have a work life you can’t wast that time…

I can expect to spend an hour and a half at the ophthalmologist I see, from initial exam and images done by staff to the injection and the images he shares with me.
Wellness checks with my internist take maybe an hour total, from initial exam to seeing her and then having a blood draw done if needed.
There is no way on earth I'd accept waiting three hours to see a specialist who over-scheduled things to that extent in an effort to maximize throughput and therefore income.
Your time has values as well, as does mine.

Sounds like this guy has a big ego and loves letting people know he’s mingling with scumy politicians.

Does this rheumatologist have an MD?
Yes, but the doctor I saw was a DO. The senior partner (MD) has billboards up with his face plastered all over. The whole thing just seemed off. The appointments running 3 hours late reminds me of the Seinfeld episode with reservations.

I have had to quit a couple of good Doctors over the years due to the insane long waits.
OMG. Those "WAITING-reading-falling asleep-passing out rooms" only to then have to wait long as twice the amount of time once in the tiny office. I have been at some where I opened the door to make sure they did not forget me in there. I suppose when there are crowded offices like that it could mean the Doctor is really good/popular. I just could not see spending hours and hours of my days for a zoom.....
quick , what? 15 minutes if you are lucky time with the Doc.

I started doing something a buddy told me worked for him. So far it has been GOLD. I schedule either the very first appointment of the day or the first one after they get back from lunch. That way the office is not already backed up with patients and I get in and right out asap.
That only works if your doctor doesn’t golf

I just had them forget me in a room experience. I posted it somewhere here. I was angry but didn’t yell. Amazing restraint. They should have given me a chocolate donut.
 I thought I read that here and then tricked myself into thinking someone here told me that story! LoL I know now where I got that from. Mr Amsoil....:)
