On the way to work this week I went through a very small amount of water that splashed up underneath the car/wheel. It had just rained. It was not a significant amount of water at all, just an inch or so towards the side of the road.
As soon as I drove past the puddle, I noticed the brake pedal had to be pushed almost to the floor to get the car to stop. It did this for the entire rest of the day. It even did this when the car was turned off. The pedal was easier to push down and didn't grab until it was almost at the floor.
No brake fluid loss to be found. The day after I was ready to fix it or take it to a shop to get it looked at but before doing so I was told to take the car out and slam on the brakes. It worked. Took the car up to about 40 mph and slammed on the brakes as hard as I could. Problem solved.
Sounds like the master cylinder is the issue. It also sounds common on certain year 3's.
