We spend $500,000 a minute on foreign oil.

Best border patrol job ever! BTW it's spelled Duluth, not Deluth. Not much to worry about in Duluth, pretty quiet place. No worries, even if a terrorist cell managed to slip past the Twin Harbors of Duluth/Superior, we here in the Upper Midwest are heavily armed (lots of hunters with high powered rifles plus MN is a right to carry state) and we are all highly patriotic.

We may drink a lot of beer and eat a lot of cheese up here, but we know the local woods like the back of our hands and have rifles put in our hands as soon as we're strong enough to hold them steady.

Beyond the joking though, the amount we spend on foreign oil is a travesty. That's just more money funneled to jokers that really don't like us or the lifestyle that we live. But I do believe we will have the last laugh. Like the character Matt Damon played in Syriana said to the Arab oil sheik:

"But what do you need a financial advisor for? Twenty years ago you had the highest Gross National Product in the world, now you're tied with Albania. Your second largest export is secondhand goods, closely followed by dates which you're losing five cents a pound on... You know what the business community thinks of you? They think that a hundred years ago you were living in tents out here in the desert chopping each other's heads off and that's where you'll be in another hundred years, so on behalf of my firm I accept your offer."

I do think we need to increase domestic production (most of my work is in the energy business). However, oil is a global commodity and oil drilled in the US will just be put on the global markets, along with oil from everywhere else in the world.

The only way this would change would be if the US government nationalized our oil reserves or forced it to stay domestically through legislation. This will absolutely not happen and nobody is calling for it.

Socialize the costs, privatize the profits. Can't knock the guy for trying .

Ok, if you provide free oil filters, we will accept not to invade you... for now.

But you'd better increase the imports as more and more canadian terrorists have cars these days. We need more in order to calm them down. We may need some Mobil1 0Wxx oil too.

http://dunner99.blogspot.com/2006/05/how-much-oil-does-america-import.html
Quote:
Last year, the U.S. imported 3,670,403 thousand barrels of oil

(Article is from a few years ago)
Current price of oil is $78.55 barrel.
So that's $288,310,155,650. 288 billion dollars for a useful product that our economy depends on.

For some perspective on that number:
Quote:
In July of 2009, the United States paid more than $19 billion in interest on the public debt [$19,812,486,187.83, Office of the Public Debt]. In 2009, according to the CBO, $177 billion of taxpayer funds will be used just to pay interest on the debt—not to pay off the debt, just to pay interest on it.

And Pickens wants public "help"...

Huh?!? What country "gives" things to the USA? We may buy more than we give but nobody and I mean nobody gives like we do. In times of need we are always there, for enemies and friends alike.

Very true. He's a MORON.

Do you have a chart that shows total dollar outlay without regard to population? Or maybe something that didnt come from The Center for Global Development.

Never mind, that same organization demonstrates my point....begrudgingly I'm sure.

Stupid timed edits!!!

Tried to add that....Cant find totals but that is one good example of how different the picture looks when per capita isnt considered. Also, kudos to Canada and Australia....you guys rock even when per capita is considered.

Thanks for the correction of the spelling. My son is living in northern NJ right now and he is leaving for the Border Patrol 2/8. We flew up here today and are going to visit the Statue of Liberty tomorrow in NYC. When I think about NYC and 9/11 I can only hope something like that never happens again. The same people that are responsible for that tragedy are the ones we send the oil money to and we all know it is not the Canadians. God Bless America and hopefully we can learn from the past and improve the future for our children with American made renewable energy sources.
