Watermelon Secrets

What's the secret to picking out a sweet watermelon? Ultra sound sonar device? Non-destructive X-ray testing? Magna-Flux?
 
I'm guessing seeded taste better? I think most fruits and vegetables have been crossbreed and aren't as good as what you'd get from a victory garden in 1943. It would be interesting to get some heirloom watermelon seeds and grow some if you have the space.
 
Just pick the first one you can get your hands on. I watched a woman thumping, knocking, drumming on various melons and she finally asked me “ how do you pick one”. And I said “ the first one”

They crossbreed to make better tasting fruit and hardier plants. We bought a watermelon a couple weeks ago and my wife said it was great. They are smaller than they were years ago. It's plenty big enough. Old watermelons were full of seeds. Not the easiest to eat. I can't eat watermelon because it gives me heart palpitations and I can't sleep with my heart all a flutter. But you can still buy the heirloom seeds and grow them.
 
Costco has been putting out some sweet seedless Sandia the last couple of times we've picked one up. :)

On thetakeout . Com recently the writer interview several farmers and from what they said is absolutely fool proof is that the green stripe should be the width of your pointer and middle fingers together.

A lady at a farmer's market once told me that ripe melons will have stripes that are wide, splotchy, and bleeding into each other and the skin surface would be lumpy and bumpy. In my experience those are pretty good indicator but not foolproof. Maybe 90% good. I just heard about the yellow bald spot indicator last year but so far that one is batting 1000.
 
1) large bright yellow spot 2) the spot where the stem was must be brown - green means it was picked early, and 3) the hollow thud -means lots of water inside

Unfortunately there usually all or nothing - either most of the ones are good, or none are - at least in the grocery store.
 
Tap on it with your knuckles. If it makes the same sound as when you tap on your forehead, it's not ripe enough. If it makes
the same sound as when you tap on your stomach, it's too ripe. If it make the same sound as when you tap on your chest
it's just right. Enjoy.

Our growing season here isn’t long enough to grow real watermelons so for next year I’ve “contracted” with a farmer friend at a lower elevation to grow seeded watermelons. The small seedless ones are an abomination.
