Water pump lubricant / rust inhibitor?

Are these products worth while? A friend of mine recommends the use of Barr's water pump lubricant with rust inhibitor.

No, they are not worthwhile. Introducing 'soluble oil' into the cooling system will only make a mess and reduce cooling capacity. Antifreeze provides all the lube that a water pump seal needs. Water pump bearings are sealed units that never touch the coolant.

I would not bother with Watter Wetter unless you are going to run straight distilled water for racing purpose's. Plain old coolant changed regularly is all you need! Those other products are just "wallet lightner" intended to seperate you from your cash and do little more then that!

When Terry was playing around with Lube Control way back when he put some in the coolant of his Daughters VW bug the modern version! Obviously the classic bug is not water cooled.So I tried it as well and while I do not know that it did anything to make a mess like other lubricants do. In fact my system is as clean as can be. It did sit on top of the reservoir though and kept my car from losing coolant from evaporation.Almost all Toyota's that use the Ultra Long Life Pink Coolant lose some due to evaporation. It never mad ea mess in my coolant system at all!

I add it to my older cars and it seems to run them around 10 degrees cooler. It also helps with lubrication of the water pump. Your choice to spend the $10...

You have a coolant gauge on your older car that is accurate enough to differentiate a 10°F temperature difference? Retrofit?

How do you quantify better water pump lubrication?
