So I'm in the process of replacing the leaking water pump on my cavalier. I found a new Carquest professional water pump in the trunk with the gasket. The part number is T1154 which when searched says fits many GM vehicles including 1993-2002 Chevrolet Cavalier, Pontiac sunfire, Chevy Beretta etc. It says it's the replacement for the 2.2 OHV engine. When I pulled the leaking water pump out it doesn't look like what's in the box. Is it possible that someone put the incorrect water pump in the box? Will Advance Auto Parts take it as a return? I might have purchased it a year ago or so but can't remember.

A 1997 Cavalier is still on the road in 2025? I haven't seen one of those in a while.
I recently had my 2002 OHV with a five speed I bought new placed out of commission. I gave it to my sister back in 2016 and it slipped off the road in a snowstorm last year and got totalled. It was still running well with a gazillion miles on it. Dashboard looked really bad, though with cracks everywhere.

It's even weirder than that. Last week I saw three different cavaliers in the span of an hour. The issue is that they built this car to be a throw away.

Does it actually fit?

Do you have any pics of the two water pumps?
Yeah the one that I removed on the Left and supposedly the correct replacement on the right.

There is a bunch of them on the road by me still, cheaply made cars, terrible plastic quality especially on the dash but very reliable until they went to the 2.2 Ecotec then timing chains became problematic.

Looks like it won't even come close to mounting. My first thought was that maybe they gave you one for the 2.4 "twin cam" engine but that isn't it either. It's just the wrong pump altogether.

It's a survivor for sure. I remember having someone coming in with an oddly low level trim (it looked like a stripper model, even the shifter was just a metal rod with a generic looking knob) Chrysler LeBaron a few years back. I was surprised to see one still running!

yeah, that's not correct at all :(

I looked on ebay for that part number, and every CQ T1154 looks like your old pump and not the new one.

Get another CQ from ebay, or get the GMB from Rock Auto. All of the ones shown on that site look like the old WP you removed.

Apparently Advance auto parts won't take returns or give store credit after 45 days any longer.

I bought one new in 2000, thinking it to be a 10 year car. Earlier this year my daughter traded it in. Still ran perfect, but the interior was falling about. The dealer basically gave her scrap value for a car with a catalytic convertor. Fine by me.
