Water in fuel

My truck is a 06 nissan titan. My concern is that everytime it rains, i found water around the gas cap, and when i open the gas cap, i see there is some dirt/water inside or around the tank hole where we refuel. Since i dont really know much about gas caps on all other vehicles. Is this common to find water/dirt in the fuel tank? I make sure my gas cap is always securely tightened but i dont know how to make my gas cap water proof to prevent water being accessible into the fuel tank.

Im a little concern about the amount of water/dirt in my fuel after stormy weathers. I believe some or little water wont hurt and that a good gas station will have enough detergents to combat the water/dirt. Thanks for any comments/replies. Do please ask questions if needed.

That's a brand new truck, must be under warranty. You should take it back to the dealer and see if they can do something about it. I've never seen water leaking through my gas cap on my car.

If the dealer is stumped, well... the fuel filter should handle the dirt, if there's not much. Try cleaning off any dirt near your gas cap though, so at least when it rains it won't wash any dirt in along with it. I've seen products at the auto store for removing water from gasoline, you could try those if you're noticing a lack of performance.

Isn't there a seal on the gas cap? Besides that, isn't there fuel filler door that covers the gas cap?

The fuel filler door on most "trucks" i've seen have the "open-door"- meaning anyone can open the door and open up the gas cap and steal gas if they wish to or pour something in... My gas cap (which i replaced with a locking-key gas cap) has a rubber seal.

Whenever i wash my truck, i would open the fuel door, and see water or dirt around the gas cap. And, when i unlock my gas cap, i see water and dirt. Not only this would apply to the locking gas cap, this would also apply to the OEM gas cap.

Even thought there is the door to cover the gas cap, the water can seep through.

Im thinking of trying to cover the gas cap with some sort of plastic cover with some rubber bands, hoping that water won't seep through the gas cap

The bit of water that is inside should drain out through a weep hole (assuming it has one). The water that is inside the filler hole when you remove the gas cap is another issue. I assume the cap is on tight?

I would have a dealer check both of these items. There should be no way that water can get past the fuel cap by casual washing or rain; a direct hit with a high pressure spray might be a different matter.

yes, the gas cap is on tight (i made sure it clicks at least 4 times). Im thinking it could be the locking-key gas cap but im not sure, i may have to go back with my oem gas cap and wash my truck to see if water/dirt is still going past the fuel cap thus may end up into the fuel tank... stay tuned..
