Trick here is to turn up the hot water heater 1hr before washing parts. Dawn works the best. Yes.......I've done it.
had to run it twice, just to dispel the lingering vapors. : ) what happens when home alone, is what happens when home alone.
looks like you had room above for a mug or glass, so you could claim you 'did the dishes'.

I wouldn't do this on a machine I put plates and glasses into. Who knows how much stuff remains behind.

Getting a junker or clearance dishwasher and just looping parts cleaner (with the heater circuit disconnected somehow) would probably work great.

I do that with my empty shotgun shells all the time. In fact it was my wife's idea. She puts them in those zippered mesh bags women wash their bras and underwear in. Works like a champ. Just make sure the drying heat is OFF.

Facts here, for those who really do stuff like that.

Run it first empty to get rid of the corrosive remains of dishwasher soap - that stuff will DESTROY raw aluminum.

Don't use dawn - the suds will explode from the unit.

Run an empty cycle of orange degreaser (low concentration) after to rid of residue.
