Washer making loud noise.

I have a Whirlpool HE washing machine circa 2012. Because it's an efficiency model, it stops during cycles a lot and does virtually nothing.

However I realize now its doing something because it randomly makes a very loud zip-tie sound 2-3 times in about 5 minutes. I don't see a an easy way to look at it and it's also on a 3ft high stack of pallets, because my drain is 6ft in the air for some reason. Could the belt be slipping? Maybe mechanical?

Does the drum spin at all. These things are all computer controlled. Mine is about the same vintage. It goes through a dry spin to sort of weight the load, then it adds water slowly, stopping then starting again, then it may add more water. It does this several times then it starts the wash. Yours sounds like it may have a toothed belts with some teeth missing or worn.

Just tried, it spins well but makes a sort of "crunch" feel, but not the noise. I've never hand spun it before so can't say if it's normal or not.
I'm wondering where the belt is on this thing, it looks like there's a lot to take off to inspect. I guess it's the BMW of washers.

front load top load what model!! general search will reveal some typical problems for various models. you might get lucky BUT girlfriends 7 YO Whirlpool front loader doing a load a week crapped out $500 for a computer controller, NOT, bought a new simpler model for lots less. like cars TOOOO many complicated things that are great when new or under a warranty but $$$$$ to fix. i had been lucky with Whirlpool in the past BUT as companies merge quality often goes away!!

It's a top load. It looks like they still sell it.
That site is pretty helpful. Hoping it's just something like the belt.
