WalMart strikes again, M1 5W-30 already opened, no foil seal. Tested too thin

I must again say that I read here you can only buy things at local B&M because eVeRYtHiNg at Amazon and ebay is counterfeit!!!!

Of course, I don't have the receipt but I'll try to return it anyway.

I am in the middle of an oil change, go to open up the 2nd of my 5 quart jugs of M1 5W-30EP and find the cap seal is broken and 100% of the foil seal is gone.

To compare the two jugs, I noticed they smell different, and a drop of oil from each of the 5 quart jugs placed on clean paper shows very different drip rates. The good bottle of M1 drips down slowly, the other quite fast. They are both the same amber color.

From now on, I may purchase the 12 quart box of oil with spigot. I don't think scammers can swap out the oil in that quite as easily.

I should have checked.
Were the little plastic tabs on the top broken? I may start taking the lid off before I even go to the checkout.

Well, at least we know that Supertech oil is good and won't do any harm if this happens to us. I would imagine that's the oil they swapped.

Yes, the plastic cap's 'tamper-evident' ring was not attached to the cap. All the tabs were broken. One I removed the cap, the foil was also missing. Unfortunately the ring does not move down like it might on other containers. So it appeared sound until I started to remove the cap.

Both 'tamper-evident' seals were broken.

I use SuperTech HMFS 5W-30 for that reason. It's spout protection is the most secure.

I had to buy an Exacto Knife from Amazon, and cut off the 2 layer paper + plastic spout protection.
Then to ensure none of the plastic fell into the oil, I bought a re-usable stainless steel metal funnel with strainer
from Amazon when pouring it.

A few extra steps, but worth it to ensure it was never tampered with and that nothing fell into the oil.

I'm trying to remember, but I'm pretty sure I had one without the aluminum seal but the rings were tight and unbroken. They clicked and broke loose when I opened it.

I can't imagine that their machinery would let bottles through without that seal, though.

In general, I wouldn't put full faith in those rings.

It might require a little effort, but it is possible to remove caps while leaving them intact. Sometimes the tolerances are poor enough to allow them to come off intact with no intent or effort.

For someone going to the trouble of committing fraud, it wouldn't be a huge obstacle to overcome.

What kind of toilet skid mark goes through all the effort of buying a cheap oil and higher end oil then pouring both out then swapping it and driving back to the store to waste their gas to then waste time in those long return lines and get a refund for it? goodness I hate some people.
I purchased Bissel rug cleaner agent that was basically used and watered down from Walmart. Very frustrating.

I checked the 5 quart jug of M1 EP 0w20 waiting for my 2018 Wrangler and sure enough, the foil seal is 1/2 peeled up, and I am highly confident it was intentionally done. The rest of the seal is super tight. They are always so tight that I usually use a blade to cut them open before pouring.

I'll be taking it back for an exchange this week. So glad to have come across this thread. I would have noticed it but not thought much about it and would have used the oil.

I am going to warn the Walmart manager about this happening. I am certain of this jug and I am fairly sure the jug I poured into my GF's Compass was missing the seal.

I'll be checking the new jug and all subsequent jugs from here out.

May the fleas from a thousand camels infest the crotch and arm pits of the people who commit this ridiculous act.

When it's time to buy a jug of Mobil 1, and it's never at Walmart, before I head to check out I crack the top and make sure it's factory sealed. Then I go purchase that same jug.

Not being at Walmart makes it nearly certain it won't be open. Cracking the cap is just insurance so it's one and done.

Every now-and-then I go to Walmart for the free freak show. Many years ago you had to pay extra to see that.

A few weeks ago, I was at a WM looking for the elusive "new" ST9972 which of course was sold out. As I browsed for a suitable substitute, I found many options on the shelf, including OEM Toyota filters. Naturally, I opened the boxes to make sure everything looked in order before pulling the trigger, and to my surprise, someone had placed an M1 filter in a Fram EG box, so I said to myself, I'll take this one! Thank you whoever you are!

Been purchasing oil and filters at wal mart for many years....Never an issue.. I always check them before I purchase too...that said at any store...

If you go to Costco, you can get a double chunk chocolate cookie or a chicken bake.

I've never had an issue with filters, either. And I really don't think I ever did with oil seals until now. But it seems to be a thing these days, so time to start checking.

I usually buy Fram Ultras. The boxes are taped shut.
