walmart recalled st2808

Does any Champion made filter have cardboard ends? I doubt they'll start.

I am a touch worried that he never explicitly said that there was NO problem with the ST2808. Seems implied that it's OK and that they are just trying to consolidate filter numbers, but still.

Hmmm, mike1gaz, I believe you're onto something. (Thanks for the response.) I do recall seeing six small circles at the end peering into the filter, but I took them for spot welds (surprisingly clean ones, though!). I might try one of these 3593As after all. Anyone have an opinion on these "leaf spring" bypass valves? They're obviou$ly $impler in de$ign and con$truction than the coil $pring variety. The question I have is would they necessarily be inferior?

hey thanks for emailing walmart directly. i guess ill try that new st3593a filter and then later i will open it to see if it may contain cardboard end caps. i wish i had a st2808 to compare it to, but ill give them a try since i got 500 miles till i have to change my oil filter for my auto rx treatment. ill call them and ask them about their filter end caps to be sure, dont want cardboard ne more.

a question came to mind, how many microns is that supertech filter? im hoping 15 just like my bosch...

id like to know about that leaf spring as well....someone comment

Data I recently posted under "Best oil filter under $6

Brand P/N Length width area, sq. in Fits
AC Delco PF9 102 2 1/2 255 1977 Chevy LUV
STP S02856A 108 1 3/4 189 ''
Purolator L10193 105 1 3/4 184 ''
Power Flo SL 14619 76 2 3/8 180 ''
Hastings LF143 71 2 1/2 178 ''
Super Tech ST3950 98 1 3/4 171 ''
Fram PH3950 48 1 3/4 84 ''

Miata B6Y214302 69 1 3/4 121 1991 Roadster
AC Delco PF2244G* 46 3 138 2002 Caviler

The first 7 oil filters above are all ones I have used on my 1977 Chevy LUV. When it was new I used a PFIX. All of them are the same outside. Do not judge a filter's area by the case. The Fram with less than 1/3 the filter area is the same size as the AC. The Miata is much smaller than either, but falls between the Fram and Super Tech in area. The SuperTech is not quite the same as the STP. If you want gobs of filter area cheap, try to find an ACDelco PF1177.

Wal-Mart has definitely changed their little electronic box that gives applications. It says they don't stock filters for 1977 LUV's anymore. I didn't have the Super Tech or STP part numbers with me so I went to the more antique friendly Advance Auto and blew $3 on a Purolator. I would appreciate it if somebody can tell me if the 3593 and 2808 interchange with the 3950. Also any part numbers that interchange with the STP SO2856A. The STP is a buck cheaper and has slightly more filter area than the Purolator. Do any of the popular priced chains stock the AC PF1177 now?

I wish I had discovered this forum and the importance of check valves and cardboard ends before I cut all those filters apart.

*All paper and plastic cartridge, $8 if you find one.

So now we've got 3 potential replacements for the 2808-

Al says "3950."

Manualman says Champion says "ST3593A."

unDummy likes the "3985."

Add in that I originally wanted a 2808 to replace the dinky 6607 spec'd for my Miata and you could consider me confused. Would someone with the book mind making a chart of any relevant data?

Thanks!

Robert

unDummy, it's posts like yours above that makes this site so worthwhile. Thanks for going to the trouble to list the specs and alternate filters. That 3985 looks like a VERY promising alternative for my Hyundai V6! Kudos, Dude!

Match the bypass pressure. Make sure larger diameter filter's gasket/oring doesn't leak.
I use 3985's and 2849's as my preferred choice when it fits as an upgrade for the 2808/6707/7317s!
Higher bypass is why I avoid the 3950/6941's.

Using wixfilters.com, crossreferencing fram or stp:

3985=wix 51626
3.8" x 3.6", 8-11 bypass

3950=wix 51381
3.1" x 3.6", 13-19 bypass

3593a=wix 51334 (no stp)
3.1" x 3.2", 8-11 bypass
2808=wix 51334 (no fram)
3.1" x 3.2", 8-11 bypass (2808/3593=same????)

6607=wix 51365
2.5" x 2.6", 8-11 bypass

7317=wix 51356 (no stp)
3.4" x 2.6", 8-11 bypass

2849a=wix 51347
4.8" x 2.9", 8-11 bypass

6941=wix 51287
4.8" x 2.9", 27-33 bypass PSI

There is also the Wix 51344. Its a little longer than the 51334(confused yet). The fram.com site lists the ph3593a as a crossover for both the 51344 and 51334.

Wix 51344, Fram PH3807a(?), supertech#????
4" x 3.2", 8-11 bypass

I facitiously said something about cardboard end caps on Champion filters and I noticed that there was another comment about that a few posts up. That's how urban legends get started, I guess. For the record,(since I started the rumor) I have absolutely no reason to believe these filters have any cardboard in them.

i just installed the st 3593 in my accord...i say now i hear clicking at 1.2 rpm but then it is gone. ill wait it out for a while, im not totally excited abotu this filter. i just needed to change it cause my fram fell apart...lol donno how. i been doing an auto rx treatment now

I'm gonna stay with the OEM filter - just one number to remember.

As for digitaldrifter91 's click at 1.2 RPM, at that speed you can't hear anything but clicking.

thats good news. i never game them a call but i emailed purolator and they responded immediatly, and i emailed mobil 1 and they responded "please call our hotline " idiots. im going to complain later when i call their hotline.

yep, there are no more ST 2808 at walmart. My car does call for ST6607 but they are way too small. So I bought ST2808. However, with the ST2808. Supertech now carries ST 7317 which replaces the ST6607!! It's the same size as the fram equivalent also.
